FROM STAFF REPORTS

PELHAM — In light of COVID-19, Pelham Public Library recently began implementing changes in how it handles day-to-day business.
In an attempt to provide residents with necessary library services, the staff began brainstorming ways to safely serve Pelham while keeping the employees and members of the community safe from the novel coronavirus.
In May, library employees began sanitizing the building and equipment in accordance with the requirements set forth by the Alabama Department of Public Health. Additionally, returned library items are quarantined for 72 hours before allowing them to be checked out by another patron.

Curbside service

On June 1, the library began offering curbside service to Shelby County residents. Library cardholders can place holds for items through the library’s online catalog available on the library’s new website at pelhamlibraryal.gov or call to request titles. Patrons are asked to wait until they are notified that holds are ready for pickup. Once notified, patrons drive to the library, park in a space near the front door, and call the library at 205-620-6418. Requested items in a labelled bag are then placed on a table located under the front entryway.

Summer reading

The Pelham Library will be using an app called READsquared (available free on the Apple App Store or Google Play), and there will be a separate program for each age group. More information for all three programs is available at Pelhamlibraryal.readsquared.com/Default.aspx?ComingSoon=bypass&PID=1999. Both the teen and children’s departments will host video programs throughout the summer. More information on these virtual activities can be found on the library’s website.

School supplies drive

From now until July 10, Pelham Public Library is hosting a school supplies drive, which will help students in foster care in Shelby County. Donations can be dropped off at the library or at the Pelham Rec Center. Acceptable donations include new school supplies, packages of new underwear and socks (children’s sixes X-small to X-large), and new or very gently used backpacks. Cash, check, and gift card donations are also accepted. $20 will purchase a new backpack, and $35 will purchase a new pair of shoes. Checks made out to Shelby County Foster Parents Association are tax deductible.
