HELENA – Helena resident Scot Newman announced his candidacy for the position of Helena City Council Place 1 on Wednesday, June 17.

“I am running because I love this city. When my family and I came to this city six years ago we were accepted with open arms, like we were family,” Newman said. “We need to keep this home town feeling.”

Newman said the city of Helena is about to go through some future growth and that it is key to make sure the growth is controlled.

“Growth is good for Helena, but we need to make sure we are ready for it,” he said.

Newman laid out a list of ways to make sure the city is prepared.

1. We all know there are traffic concerns and things are in process. But I will work to see if there are more opportunities to improve what’s already coming.
2. Work with our school system to make sure our schools are ready for Helena’s growth and education doesn’t become impaired.
3. Work with others to make sure our city stays safe and the growth of Helena doesn’t take over our home town charm.
4. I will be an advocate and promote our small business.

Newman has been married to his wife Jennifer for 12 years. The two have one kid together named Bryce, who 11 years old and will be going to Helena Middle School next year. He also has a stepson, Drew Hosler, who just graduated from Bowling Green in Ohio and will be going to the University of Michigan for his master’s in Saxophone performance next year. He also has a daughter named Allison Newman that has graduated from GVSU in broadcasting.

Newman has been working in the automotive industry for the last 14 years, working his way up to manager. He has also spent time coaching Helena Rec sports in soccer, football and baseball.

Newman is also the director of Helena Market Days (Helena’s Farmers Market), which recently kicked off for the summer of 2020.

“With my team, we have kept the Market a success bringing fresh fruits and veggies to Helena and bringing families together every Saturday,” he said.

He also serves as the president of Helena’s Buck Creek Festival. This year was his team’s first year of handling the festival, and Newman said they were forced to make some tough decisions, including postponing the event to later this year instead of canceling it altogether.
