PELHAM — The legendary phoenix is a bird that symbolically regenerates from the ashes of its predecessor—so it’s no coincidence that a phoenix is the chosen logo of CrossFit Inferis of Pelham.

“We want to bring people out of the dark place they are in and make them reborn through health and wellness,” said Jonathan Luna, owner of the newly established gym and physical fitness center.

CrossFit Inferis opened with a welcome party on June 6 and started holding its first classes June 8. Member classes are offered Monday through Friday at 7 a.m., 8 a.m., 9 a.m., 4 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Member exercises vary day to day and focus on “functional movement”; for example, squats mimic the motions one would make when getting up out of a sofa or chair.

The exercises include weight lifting, power lifting, gymnastics and cardio—all led by an experienced coach.

“The goal of CrossFit is to be a little good at everything,” Luna said.

Each Saturday an “open gym” is held from 9-10 a.m. in which those in attendance hone skills and work on techniques based on an overall consensus formed that day prior to the workout.

In addition, community workouts are offered for non-members from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

CrossFit Inferis offers nutritional guidance as well, and the company is partnered with a chiropractor who comes out once a month.

Luna does not want potential customers to be intimidated by thoughts of “jacked up” individuals like professional bodybuilders, when 99 percent of those who participate in CrossFit are normal people who are simply out to better themselves. Instead, CrossFit Inferis offers a level playing field.

“Most people when they think of CrossFit are intimidated,” Luna said. “Any movement that is too technical or any weight that is too heavy, we can always change it to customize the workout to the individual needs of the customer so they get the same workout as everyone else at the gym.”

Luna, who has been doing CrossFit for about six years, said he grew up overweight in a family potentially at risk for conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

“I wanted to be the one that wasn’t riddled with that stuff,” he said. “I wanted people to be able to succeed in ways they never thought they would be able to.”

CrossFit Inferis is located at 993 Yeager Parkway in Pelham and can be reached at 205-451-3095 or by email at crossfitinferisinfo@gmail.com or on Facebook.
