Hundreds turn out for Wilsonville fireworks

WILSONVILLE — The town of Wilsonville celebrated Independence Day with a fireworks show on June 28, albeit without the usual God and Country event that typically accompanies the celebration.
Mayor Lee McCarty said he was pleased with how the event turned out.
“We were trying to give people a little bit of hope in the middle of all the COVID chaos,” he said. “The bigger (God and Country) event was not safely doable.”
Many of those in attendance stayed in their vehicles, went to Central Park or viewed the fireworks from nearby churches.
McCarty said that while it was difficult to estimate the total number of attendees, he guessed that there were 250 or more vehicles parked for the event.
“Pretty much everybody stayed apart,” he said. “It was a cool evening.”
McCarty and event organizers hold out hope that the God and Country event, which is presented each year by Wilsonville Baptist Church, will still be held.
“Our customary food, music and inflatables activities have been tentatively rescheduled for Sept. 6 (the Sunday before Labor Day), dependent upon guidelines and community conditions in effect at that date. We will update on any changes as we find out,” stated a post on the official Facebook page for the event, “Wilsonville’s God and Country Celebration.”
