NORTH SHELBY – In a matchup that saw both teams fight to the bitter end, Oak Mountain outlasted McAdory 41-40 at home in a women’s basketball nail-biter on Thursday, Dec. 5.
Addison Green led the way for the Eagles with 13 points, and was the only player for Oak Mountain to score in double figures.
For McAdory, the two-headed offensive attack of Zoe and Alyssa Lessears, who combined for nearly half of the Yellow Jackets’ offensive output, wasn’t enough to claim victory.
Both teams played aggressive defense in the first quarter, as the matchup headed to the second period with a score of 7-5. It was clear that both head coaches, Scott Blair for McAdory and Aimee Harris for Oak Mountain, were in no hurry to get in a shootout.
The second quarter was a similar story, as Oak Mountain scored seven points again and McAdory put up 10, heading to halftime with a 15-14 lead.
Addison Green had five of Oak Mountain’s 14 points headed to half, while the offensive prowess of the Lessears kept McAdory in the game.
The third quarter saw both offenses ramp up the intensity. Oak Mountain scored 13 points in the period, bringing their total to 27, while McAdory had 15 points in the quarter to extend their lead to 30-27 headed to the fourth.
McAdory continued to play through the Lessears. Zoe converted plenty of chances in the paint, while Alyssa got to the free throw line with ease in the quarter.
While McAdory seemed to grab momentum in the third behind the play of the Lessears, Oak Mountain didn’t blink and scored 14 points in the final quarter to snatch a 41-40 victory from the jaws of defeat.
Alyssa did not score in the fourth quarter, putting the onus on her sister to close out the game for the Yellow Jackets. While Zoe played great, the clutch play of Addison Green, who scored most of her points in the fourth, outshined her efforts.
Next up for Oak Mountain is their second home game in as many days, as they will play host to the Chelsea Hornets on Friday, Dec. 6. McAdory will also play Friday, traveling to Helena to face the Huskies.
