COLUMBIANA – The Shelby County Wildcats are rolling thanks to five straight victories, including their two latest over a two-day stretch.
Shelby County defeated the Westminster School at Oak Mountain Knights 67-17 on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at Shelby County High School to improve to 8-1 on the season.
The win came after a busy stretch where the Wildcats defeated the Thorsby Rebels 63-43 on the road on Friday, Dec. 6 and beat the St. Clair County Saints 65-28 on Monday, Dec. 9 at home.
Kenna’d Buie provided a big spark for the Shelby County offense early, scoring 18 points in the first quarter alone, including a trio of 3-pointers. Morgan Arnold contributed five points as part of a 25-point opening quarter for the Wildcats offense.
That set the tone early, especially when paired with a defensive effort where Shelby County allowed just one field goal and four total points from Westminster in the first quarter, and the Wildcats went into the second quarter with a 25-4 lead.
The scoring pace slowed down in the second quarter, but Sanyia Floyd kept Shelby County active on the offensive end. After scoring two points in the first quarter, she added nine points in the second to get into double figures for the first half.
The Knights got some more offensive momentum, scoring eight points from four different scorers, but the Wildcats continued to pull away and led 39-12 at the halftime break.
Shelby County ramped up the intensity in the third quarter, only this time, it was Arnold’s turn to lead the offense. She scored 16 of her team’s 22 third-quarter points and all but one of its baskets from the field during that span.
On the other end of the floor, the Wildcats allowed just two points in the third, building out a commanding 61-14 lead by the end of the third quarter.
From there, Shelby County coasted to a 50-point victory to extend its win streak to five games in a row.
Arnold led the Wildcats with 24 points, and Buie also had more than 20 points in the game with 21 points. Floyd joined them in double figures with 11 points, all in the first half, and Daleigh Griffin scored five points.
Reese Robbins led Westminster with five points and Olivia Montgomery scored four points.
Shelby County will look to keep its winning ways going in its road trip to Vincent on Friday, Dec. 13 at 6 p.m.
The Knights will be back in action at home against Thorsby on Friday, Dec. 13 at 5:45 p.m. at Berry Middle School.
