CHELSEA – With white jackets and pins being given to many, healthcare students from Chelsea High School celebrated their studies and accomplishments with the school’s third annual White Jacket and CPCT Pinning Ceremony on Tuesday, Jan. 28.
The ceremony took place on Jan. 28 at 8:30 a.m. in the Chelsea High School Auditorium, with a celebratory reception following in the school’s library.
Healthcare Academy Instructor Andrea Maddox pointed out that this year’s class continued on the program’s tradition in making history, as it has done since its first class in the 2019-2020 school year.
“For this group of seniors in particular, they studied harder than probably any class I’ve ever had,” Maddox said. “They worked incredibly hard to hit a 100 percent pass rate on the CPCT exam, and this exam is not easy. It has a 73 percent pass rate nationwide and that’s across high school and adult learners, so for them, for 31 students to study and achieve 100 percent pass rate, I couldn’t be prouder.”
In a program that has steadily grown over its history, students only just recently began to be able to partake in an internship component, where they attend clinicals at local facilities to get hands-on experience.
Maddox discussed how when the program got started up, internships were just a dream. Now, that dream has become reality.
“Internship at that point was just a dream and that was the goal, was to get to the point where we provided an internship with our industry partners,” Maddox said. “We eventually in year three were able to add the internship component to the program. We started with 11 students in that first internship class, and now we’ve built up to the point where we have 31 in our fourth internship cohort. There has been rapid growth over the past four years, providing more and more opportunities with the facilities that we go to.”
Each student in the class got the opportunity to dedicate their pin to somebody or a group of people that had a significant impact on their development and journey to this accomplishment.
As for the future of the program, Maddox hopes that what this class did pushes the future seniors and upcoming students to strive for the best and lay it all out there so they can achieve just what the class of 2025 did.
“I just hope that it inspires them,” Maddox said. “A lot of people may not have someone in their life who is a healthcare provider or family member who works in the healthcare field, so they may feel like this is unobtainable or they may feel intimidated by going into the healthcare field. Hopefully seeing these upperclassmen work hard, have these achievements on the high school level, showing them that healthcare is accessible and there are lots of opportunities for them that hopefully our upcoming generation, they are inspired to join our healthcare academy program, learn these skills and see if the healthcare field is the right field for them.”
