CALERA – Felix Humberto Farjado-Sanchez, a 23-year-old Columbiana resident, has been arrested by the Calera Police Department for alleged criminal mischief and attempted burglary.

On Monday, Feb. 3, the CPD received a call from a woman who reported a suspicious person in her backyard. Officers responded to the scene and found a highly-intoxicated man in the area with stolen items from two locations—including the U.S. mail which were subsequently recovered.

According to the Calera Police Department, the suspect, who is from Honduras, had been previously arrested and released in December 2024 by the Border Patrol for being in the country illegally.

“We have notified ICE and charged the suspect with criminal mischief and attempted burglary here in Shelby County,” read an official post by the Calera Police Department. “We also are working with the postal inspectors on a potential federal mail theft charge.”

Farjado-Sanchez was booked into the Shelby County Jail on Feb. 4 on a total bond of $5,500 with charges of criminal mischief in the third degree and Class C felony—attempt to commit a crime.

According to court records, Farjado-Sanchez allegedly attempted to “break into a residence by ripping off the window screen to enter the residence” on Feb. 3 at approximately 11:30 p.m. causing less than $500 in damage.

“I wish we were always able to respond this fast to protect our citizens,” Chief of Police David Hyche said. “Our call volume and staffing continue to be a challenge for us especially with the rapid growth of our city. Both reactive cases like this one and proactive cases are priorities for our staff.”
