MONTGOMERY – Three of the county’s most successful wrestlers this season are heading to the AHSAA State Wrestling Championships as sectional champions.

Spain Park’s Bradley Williams, Helena’s Kenyon Clements and Chelsea’s Porter Schott won their respective weight classes in Class 6A at the AHSAA South Sectional Wrestling Championships at Montgomery’s Garrett Coliseum from Feb. 6-8.

The trio will be joined by multiple Spain Park Jaguars, Helena Huskies and Pelham Panthers at the state championship at the Propst Arena at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville from Feb. 13-15 as the top six wrestlers in each weight class qualified for state.

Williams kept his undefeated streak alive and going, improving to 51-0 on the season with four quick wins at sectionals. His first two pins of the tournament came in 15 seconds or less, and he earned a pin at the 1:32-mark of his semifinal match to advance to the finals.

There, he wasted little time racking up a 21-3 score at the 2:36-mark to secure a technical fall and the title.

Helena’s Clements won the 120-pound division with a 4-0 run at sectionals to improve to 38-2 on the season. He started the tournament with a pin with three seconds left in the first period before earning 11-4 and 7-3 decisions to reach the finals, which he won by a technical fall.

Chelsea’s Schott improved to 39-1 on the season with a first-place finish in the boys 215-pound division. He won his first two matches of the tournament with pins in the first 25 seconds of the match but had to get it done on points from then on.

Schott took an 8-0 major decision in the quarterfinals, a 6-4 decision in the semifinals and a 7-1 decision in the championship match to secure the title and top seed.

Pelham’s Maddox McDaniel defeated Spain Park’s JP Isaminger in the fifth-place match of the 106-pound division with a 12-5 decision as both wrestlers advanced to the state championship thanks to a pair of wins each in the consolation bracket.

Spain Park’s London Ford came in third place in the boys 113-pound division with a technical fall in the consolation semifinals and a 17-12 decision in the third-place match.

Spain Park’s Kyle Fairless qualified for state as the sixth-place finisher in the 126-pound division. He reached the quarterfinals off a technical fall and major decision, but after losing, he secured two technical falls in the consolation bracket to guarantee a top-six finish.

Pelham’s Sam Powell improved to 31-5 on the season with a third-place finish in the 138-pound division. He automatically advanced to the quarterfinals off a forfeit and got an 11-2 major decision to reach the semifinals.

However, he lost there and had to earn a pin with five seconds left in the first period to qualify for the third-place match, which he won off a forfeit.

Spain Park’s Sawyer Hardy earned third place in the 144-pound division with a 4-1 record at sectionals. He reached the semifinals off a pair of pins but had to get a 14-2 major decision and 7-5 decision in the consolation bracket to earn third place.

Helena’s Caden Swinford took sixth place in the same division after he earned an 8-0 major decision and second-period pin to clinch a top-six finish and a spot in state.

Pelham’s Brayden Patterson came in sixth in the 165-pound division after he made it to the semifinals with a technical fall in the first round and 6-4 decision in the semifinals.

Helena’s Brandon McGuire secured sixth place in the 175-pound division. He reached the quarterfinals of the main bracket with a second-period pin and a 13-3 major decision, but after suffering a technical fall, he earned one of his own in the consolation bracket plus a 7-1 decision in the next round to guarantee a top-six finish.
