ALABASTER – Thirteen proved to be the Thompson Warriors’ lucky number in their home opener on Thursday, Feb. 13 as they got into double digits on the scoreboard and scored the most goals in the history of their program.
Thompson breezed past the Decatur Red Raiders 13-4 at Warrior Stadium to secure its fourth-straight positive result to begin the 2025 season. Thompson’s previous record came in a 12-0 win over Tuscaloosa County on Feb. 28, 2023.
According to Eurosport Scorbord, the Warriors’ 13 goals were the most they ever scored dating back to the 2007-08 season when the program first began.
The Warriors took the fight to the Red Raiders from the opening whistle and put goal after goal into the back of the net. In all, Thompson scored nine goals in the opening 40 minutes of the game.
The Warriors entered the halftime break with a 9-1 advantage after Decatur found the back of the net once in the first half. That margin meant just two unanswered goals would trigger the mercy rule, but Decatur had other plans.
The Red Raiders opened the half with three straight goals as they got through the Warriors backline multiple times in the first minutes of the second half. Decatur cut the deficit to 9-4 and forced Thompson to respond.
From there, the Warriors defense held strong and didn’t allow a single goal the rest of the way. That opened up opportunities for the offense to put four more goals past the Red Raiders in the remainder of the game and set the program record in a nine-goal win.
Luna Montiel-Duenas led the offense with four goals and two assists. Nathalie Gonzalez also ended the match with a hat trick thanks to her three goals. Jayna Chakua and Quinn Eichelberger each had two goals in the victory.
Charli Gantt led the team in assists with four while Dia Montiel-Duenas finished with three assists and Lexi Gabucci earned two assists.
With the win, Thompson improved to 3-0-1 on the season and has now won three-straight matches since its season-opening 1-1 draw against Spanish Fort at the Southern Shootout.
The Warriors will hit the road on Tuesday, Feb. 18 to take on the Briarwood Christian Lions at 5 p.m. at Lions Pride Stadium.
