ALABASTER – The Thompson Warriors rallied from a season-opening 3-0 loss to Moody to win four-straight games at their home tournament.
The Warriors finished the Thompson Presidents Day Tournament with a 14-0 win over the Bibb County Choctaws, an 8-0 victory over the Hazel Green Trojans, a 9-4 win over the Northside Rams and a 3-2 victory over the Chelsea Hornets on Feb. 13-14 at Veterans Park in Alabaster.
In the second game of the tournament against Bibb County, Thompson used a pair of early walks to set up a run off a wild pitch and an RBI single from Olivia Tindell to take a 2-0 lead.
After a walk, another run scored off an error to kick off four-straight scoring plays. Hannah Hobbs hit an RBI double, Mallory Flournoy drove in a run off a sacrifice fly and Hobbs stole home to make the lead 6-0.
The next batter singled to set up an RBI double from Kelsey Burden to finish off an 8-0 lead in the middle of the first.
The Warriors struck again after Kadyn Bush came home a pitch after hitting a one-out triple in the top of the second. Thompson resumed scoring in the top of the third with a two-run double from Tindell, a run off a passed ball and RBI singles from Flournoy and Jillian Kato to finish the 14-0 win.
Bush earned the win with five strikeouts in two shutout inning against just one hit, and Autumn Ingle secured three strikeouts in an inning against one hit.
Tindell, Bush, Hobbs, Flournoy and Hamm each had multi-hit games as Tindell earned three RBI and two runs and Flournoy, Burden, and Blakely Davis each had two RBI.
In the third and final game of the day against Hazel Green, Aubree Hooks dealt a pair of strikeouts in the top of the first before Tindell hit a one-out RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.
With one on and two outs, Hobbs hit a home run to center to increase the lead to 3-0. Hooks then walked to put a runner on for Morgan Adolphus, who hit an RBI double to make it a four-run lead.
Flournoy kept the momentum rolling with a single before Hamm finished the inning’s scoring with an RBI single, give Thompson a 5-0 lead.
Hooks struck out five batters over the next two innings, including the second inning where she struck out the side, to keep the Trojans at bay.
With one on and two out in the bottom of the third, Flournoy resumed the scoring with an RBI double. That set up RBI singles from Josie Hamm and Burden to cap off the scoring and give the Warriors the 8-0 win after five innings.
Hooks pitched all five innings and racked up 10 strikeouts against no runs, three hits and two walks. Flournoy and Hamm both went 2-for-2 as Flournoy had a run and an RBI and Hamm earned two RBI and one run. Burden went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Hobbs finished with two RBI in a 1-for-3 outing.
Thompson started off Friday strong with an early 9-0 lead over Northside.
After a single and a walk to start proceedings in the top of the first, Bush hit an RBI single, Tindell stole home, Hobbs hit an RBI double and Flournoy secured an RBI single to cap off the four-play stretch and take a 4-0 lead.
Two batters later, Ansley Haynes hit a two-out RBI single to put her team up 5-0 at the end of the first.
The Warriors kept pouring on the runs in the top of the sixth thanks to a two-out RBI single from Hobbs. After Flournoy got hit by a pitch and Hooks singled, Adolphus grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Hobbs and took the lead to 7-0.
Thompson loaded up the bases with one out in the top of the third and extended the lead to 8-0 off a Hobbs RBI single. Tindell scored two batters later to add her team’s ninth and final run of the game.
The Rams scored four unanswered runs to end the game, but it wouldn’t matter much as the Warriors earned the five-run win.
Bush took the win with five strikeouts in 3.1 innings against two earned runs, three hits and four walks. Hooks closed the game with four strikeouts in 1.2 shutout innings.
Hobbs ended the game 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs. Burden had a 2-for-4 game with two runs.
Thompson then engaged in a low-scoring duel with Chelsea that saw the teams go scoreless for the first two innings.
The Warriors got an opening in the top of the third after loading up the bases off two walks and a Tindell single. With no outs on the board, Hobbs and Flournoy used that cushion to plate two runs off sacrifice flies and take a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the third.
However, the Hornets responded in the bottom of the fourth, loading up the bases with a walk, single and hit batsman with one out. While the next batter popped out, Sadie Wilson tied up the game with a two-run single.
Thompson caught a break in the top half of the fifth when the lead-off batter Tindell reached on an error. Two batters later, she came home off a bunt single by Hobbs to take a 3-2 lead, and Hooks orchestrated a one-two-three bottom half of the inning to seal the one-run win.
Hooks racked up 12 strikeouts in a complete-game effort of five innings. She allowed just two runs off three hits and a walk. Alaysha Crews also went the distance for Chelsea and had three strikeouts against two earned runs, five hits and three walks.
Thompson is off until Tuesday, Feb. 25 when it will have a massive showdown with the Helena Huskies at 4:30 p.m. at Helena High School.
