INDIAN SPRINGS VILLAGE – When the Calera Eagles and Indian Springs squared off last week in the boys Lakeshore Shootout, nothing could separate them after regulation in a 2-2 draw.

Five days later, the Eagles left no doubt on the pitch, and this time, the girls got to join them in the win column.

Calera took the boys game 5-1 on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at Indian Springs School after the girls secured a 3-1 victory earlier in the evening.

In the boys game, the Eagles got off to a bit of a slow start on the offensive end and didn’t score at all in the opening 40 minutes. However, their defense once again kept them in the game as they held Springs to a shutout in the first half to leave the teams tied at 0-0 at the break.

That scoring drought quickly came to an end in the second half as Calera scored less than a minute after the break.

Armando Perez served up a chance for Alex Garcia, who scored in the 41st minute to put the Eagles up 1-0.

Calera quickly added a second goal thanks to Garcia. Although this time, he was responsible for the assist as he found Sam Njoroge for the second goal of the match in the 43rd minute.

The Eagles ended up scoring three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half as Perez came up with his second assist, this time finding Matthew Doerfler who finished the job.

Calera had a 3-0 lead for all of nine minutes before Indian Springs got on the board to cut the deficit to 3-1 in the 59th minute.

However, that was all that Springs could muster on the offensive end. Xander Lenoir added a fourth goal to the Eagles’ total in the 70th minute, and before the end of the game, Mario Portillo finished off the scoring to take the 5-1 win.

Five different goalscorers found the back of the net for Calera while Perez added two assists to his goal and Garcia earned an assist as well.

As for the girls game, Brianna Collier came up big for the Eagles in their 3-1 win over Springs.

After Calera won 3-0 in their last time out at Stanhope Elmore on Thursday, Feb. 13, the Eagles came out and attacked the game on the offensive end.

Collier led the way for the Calera offense as she scored all three of her team’s goals to secure a hat trick.

Two of those goals came from assists off Reece Collier’s foot while Jackie Martinez helped secure the other one with an assist.

Indian Springs could only score one goal in response the entire match as the Eagles continued their undefeated season with a 3-1 victory.

Calera’s girls stand at 3-0-1 after the win while the boys are 4-1-1 on the year.

The girls will have their time to shine in the Lakeshore Shootout after the boys played last weekend. They will face Decatur on Friday, Feb. 21 at 4 p.m., Pell City on Friday, Feb. 21 at 8:30 p.m. and Northridge on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 1:30 p.m. All games will take place at the Eagle Sports Complex.

As for the boys, their Thursday, Feb. 20 game against Hoover was cancelled due to sub-freezing temperatures, but they will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. for a match against the Gardendale Rockets at the Eagle Sports Complex.

Indian Springs was also affected by the weather as it was set to host Sipsey Valley in area play on Thursday, Feb. 21. Instead, the 1-2 girls and 3-2-1 boys will make the short trip to Columbiana to face the Shelby County Wildcats on Friday, Feb. 21 with the boys playing at 4 p.m. and the girls set to start at 5 p.m.
