HELENA – Coming off of back-to-back losses and searching for a way to get back on track, the Helena Huskies put together a solid performance and got back into the win column against the Gardendale Rockets.

Helena put on an offensive showcase in its 8-0 victory on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at Helena High School, going on a rout in the second half to seal the game.

The match started off slow, but once the Huskies got in a rhythm in this one, there was no stopping them from getting out of it.

Henley Havens kicked the scoring off in the 32nd minute of the contest, taking the ball all by herself on a trip through the box and putting it in the back of the net unassisted.

Just seven minutes later in the 39th minute, Havens got back involved in the action, feeding it to Kate Hendrix on her way to a goal, extending the Helena lead to 2-0 right before the break.

Coming out of the break, Hendrix kept her momentum going from the first half in the 52nd minute, putting a shot in from outside the 18-yard box to set the Huskies’ lead at three goals. Despite the big lead though, Helena was not content with stopping there.

In the 55th minute, Saylor Peterson continued the action with a stellar through ball in the direction of Havens, who knocked in her second goal of the night. Havens was not done there though, as in the 59th minute, Kendall Payton laced a through ball of her own towards Havens, who capitalized on it and scored a hat trick to make it a 5-0 game.

Shortly after that goal, Hendrix got a pass off in the box to sophomore striker Kayleigh Ames, who got it past the goalie to the back of the net in the 62nd minute, making it four goals in 10 minutes for the Huskies.

Helena continued its big performance in the 73rd minute, when eighth grader Hannah Brunson took an outside lane and passed it in the box to Baileigh Rumage for the score. Brunson then capped it off in the 75th minute, getting a feed from Payton and scoring just inside the box, making it 8-0.

The defense also played a stellar game with its second clean sheet on the year, its first since its scoreless tie with Florence in the second game of the campaign.

The Huskies will try to make it back-to-back wins in their next game, which will be on the road at Thompson High School to face the Thompson Warriors on Monday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m.

Helena’s game on Thursday, Feb. 20 at home against Shades Valley was postponed, and a replacement date has yet to be announced.
