ALABASTER – Following a vacancy in leadership, Montevallo High School is officially breaking in a new principal to oversee its students and staff.

The Shelby County Schools Board of Education honored the appointment of David Butts as the new principal of Montevallo High School at its meeting on Thursday, Dec. 20.

Butts greeted the Board following an introduction by Dr. Lewis Brooks, superintendent of Shelby County Schools, stating his excitement for the new opportunity of leadership.

“Thank y’all for letting me have this prestigious principal’s job,” Butts said. “I’ve been there now for one and a half and I’ve been welcomed and it’s been a great ride so far. We have a lot to do, but I feel like it’s going in the right direction and I’ve gotten a lot of support. I think this is a great, tremendous community.”

Butts enters the position with 24 years of experience in public education, and most recently served as the principal at New Direction/Success. Prior to that, he served as an assistant principal at Helena High School. Butts earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Faulkner University and went on to earn a master’s degree in instructional leadership from the University of West Alabama.

Butts recognized his family for all of their support, saying that he could not do what he does without them.

“I thank my wife and both of my boys,” Butts said. “They’re very supportive of me and my whole career. Sometimes I wasn’t home because I was a coach. Being able to be around them and watch them grow… Thank y’all, I appreciate it.”

The move comes after former principal Steve Bromley relocated to take an assistant principal position at Helena High School.

Bromley was approved to be the principal of Montevallo High School in July 2019. Prior to that he was an administrative assistant at Helena High School and an assistant principal at Calera High School. Bromley holds over 20 years of educational experience, and in that time has served as a teacher, coach and administrator.

After Bromley took his newest position back at Helena High School, Montevallo began the search for its newest leader. Butts then began working in his position in January, striving to make Montevallo High School a better learning environment for its teachers and students.
