BESSEMER – The Montevallo Bulldogs secured a pair of results from their road trip north of town to Bessemer as they continued their strong start to the season.
Montevallo’s boys and girls soccer teams took on a Class 6A road test in the Bessemer City Purple Tigers, and the girls took a 10-0 win in a game which ended by the mercy rule before the boys drew 0-0 on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at Bessemer City High School.
The Bulldogs girls dominated the Purple Tigers from start to finish, frequently finding the back of the net to increase the hole on offense before taking the victory.
Zabdy Perez was a major force for Montevallo’s offense, scoring four goals to lead the attack. Violeta Mendoza also scored multiple goals in the win as she had two goals to earn a brace for the Bulldogs.
Montevallo scored goals from a variety of different plays. Syndi Salazar and Alondra Torres put the ball in the back of the net from open field, but the Bulldogs also found success on set pieces as well as Mallory Diaz scored off a corner kick.
In the end, Chloe Howard put the finishing touches on the victory with the 10th and final goal of the night to end the match before the 80-minute mark.
The Bulldogs defense also controlled the entirety of the match and secured a clean sheet as part of the 10-0 victory.
As for the boys, they took on a tough test in the form of a Class 6A opponent fresh off a playoff appearance in Bessemer City.
Montevallo couldn’t get a goal past the Purple Tigers defense in the entirety of the match, but it didn’t need to in order to secure a positive result.
The Bulldogs kept Bessemer City’s offense quiet and, like the girls, also netted a clean sheet.
As a result, Montevallo and Bessemer City finished in a 0-0 draw as the Bulldogs extended their unbeaten streak to five straight matches.
Montevallo’s boys improved to 3-1-2 with the draw while the girls are 3-2-1 on the season after rebounding from their Lakeshore loss to Carver-Birmingham.
Both sides will be back in action at home against another Class 6A foe: the Chilton County Tigers. Kick-off for the girls is set for 5 p.m. before the 7 p.m. boys game at Theron Fisher Stadium in Montevallo.
