ALABASTER – With a stifling pitching staff and a number of quality wins under their belt, the Thompson Warriors were in familiar territory when they capped off a tight and low-scoring victory against the Oak Mountain Eagles.

Thompson defeated Oak Mountain 2-1 on Thursday, Feb. 27, only giving up one hit in the process and doing just enough to secure a tense battle in Class 7A.

The Warriors have already put on many great defensive performances in 2025, and this game was no exception. However, pressure mounted early on the home team.

Following a lead-off walk to begin the game, Thompson recorded two quick outs before Eagles’ catcher Brooke Monosky got hit by a pitch, putting two runners on. Both runners advanced in the next at-bat on a passed ball, and soon after, Oak Mountain scored a run off of an error by Warriors’ starting pitcher Kadyn Bush, making it 1-0 early in the first inning.

Despite the deficit though, Thompson got things back in a rhythm and surged through the next two innings with minimal damage, only allowing one player to get on base in the process.

After the Warriors later got out of the top of the fourth inning unscaved, the tides started to shift towards their side. With two quick outs to begin the bottom half of the fourth, Whitney Holtzapfel singled into center field to get a runner on. Morgan Adolphus followed that up with a single of her own, and right after, Blakely Davis secured a walk to load the bases up.

With the momentum all in Thompson’s possession, Kelsey Burden stepped up to the plate with one thing on her mind: getting her team the lead. Luckily for her, the plan worked to perfection. Davis delivered a full-count single that scored two runs, putting the Warriors on top 2-1.

From then on, all Thompson had to do was rely on its pitching and defense to do the work in order to come away with the win. The Warriors did exactly that, allowing only two Eagles to get on base the rest of the way and nothing more, securing the 2-1 victory at home.

Lexi Kelley secured the win in the circle for Thompson, pitching 1.2 innings and surrendering Oak Mountain’s only hit of the game. Autumn Ingle recorded the save behind her, giving up no hits and striking out three in three full innings of work.

On the other side, Marian Cummings picked up the loss in the pitcher’s duel, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out four and walking one in 3.2 innings in the circle.

With the victory, the Warriors improve to 12-1 on the year and will hit the road to begin the month of March in a game against the Jasper Vikings. That game is set for Monday, March 3, with first pitch set for 4:30 p.m. at Jasper High School.

As for the Eagles, the loss drops them to 8-6, and they will also hit the road for their next game on Tuesday, March 4 against the Sumiton Christian Eagles at 4:30 p.m. at Sumiton Christian School.
