MONTEVALLO – After a disappointing midweek result where they couldn’t get any of their shots in the back of the net, the Montevallo Bulldogs secured not one, but four goals in a commanding win over a Class 6A foe.
Montevallo’s boys soccer team defeated the Chilton County Tigers 4-1 on Thursday, Feb. 27 at Theron Fisher Stadium to earn their sixth-straight result since their season-opening loss.
The victory came after a 0-0 draw at Bessemer City on Tuesday, Feb. 25 where the Bulldogs couldn’t convert any of their 10 shots on goal but got a clean sheet while allowing just one shot on goal from the Purple Tigers attack.
Montevallo wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Irving Choto scored just 23 seconds into the game off an Alexis Lopez through ball to put the hosts up 1-0.
A minute later, Lopez got fouled inside the penalty box to give the Bulldogs a chance to double up their lead. He took his own penalty kick and slotted home the shot, putting Montevallo up 2-0 just two minutes into the match.
Montevallo kept Chilton County off the scoreboard from open field, but a set piece chance in the 20th minute allowed the Tigers to get one back. Chilton County scored off a free kick to make it a 2-1 game and put pressure on Montevallo to respond.
The Bulldogs had to wait until the 38th minute to restore their two-goal lead, but they did so in spectacular fashion. Lopez found an opportunity just inches away from the end line to fire home a shot, and he threaded the needle to give Montevallo a 3-1 lead going into halftime.
The teams were evenly contested for much of the second half, but the Bulldogs remained in front and grew its lead in the closing minutes of the match. In the 72nd minute, Junior Alverenga rocketed a high shot that the keeper couldn’t handle until he was back inside his own net.
That increased the lead to 4-1, and it held even after a 73rd-minute penalty chance for the Tigers as Erik Angel came up with a big save to preserve the three-goal advantage.
As for the girls, the Bulldogs lost 2-1 to Chilton County as the Tigers picked up their first win of the season. Each team scored in the first half, but Chilton County broke the deadlock in the second half to claim the victory.
Montevallo’s girls team fell to 3-3-1 and will face Sipsey Valley in its next match on Monday, March 3 at 5:30 p.m. in a road area test.
Both sets of Bulldogs will be in action on Thursday, March 6 at Theron Fisher Stadium against Indian Springs, with the girls kicking off at 5 p.m. and the 4-1-2 boys set to play at 7 p.m.
