Alabaster now accepting applications for next police chief

ALABASTER – The city of Alabaster is now accepting applications for its next police chief who will succeed Curtis Rigney.

After serving the city of Alabaster for more than 30 years, the city’s current chief of police, Rigney, announced that he will be retiring in June.

Applications for the city’s chief of police are now open until April 7.

“This is an opportunity to lead one of the top law enforcement agencies in the southeast in a city that is continually ranked among the safest in the state,” read an official Facebook post by the city of Alabaster.

The position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice, public administration or related field. Applicants must also be certified by the Alabama Police Officers Standard and Training Commission. The city indicates that it also strongly prefers a FBI National Academy graduate and participants of the Certified Law Enforcement Executive program.

Candidates need to have at least 10 years of experience in police work and five years of experience as a police chief in a similarly-sized jurisdiction or as a high level commander/administrator at a rank not less than a lieutenant and show progressive supervisory/management experience with a range of operational and administrative experience. Desired experience should include leadership responsibility in various management functions such as operations, human resources, legal, discipline, hiring and/or budgeting. Additionally, previous experience working within a mayor/council form of government is desired.

Physical fitness activities are required for the police chief position and involve frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms, talking, hearing, smelling; occasional running, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling. The position also requires lifting of up to 25 pounds frequently and 50 pounds occasionally as well as special vision requirements including, close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The city advises that physical condition and hazards may be encountered while working in the position, including extreme heat and cold, moving mechanical parts, fumes, odors, toxic chemicals, infectious diseases, risk of electric shock and vibration, and loud noise.

The salary of the Alabaster chief of police is listed in the range of $109,449.60 to $151,507.20.

During a meeting on Feb. 10, the Alabaster City Council approved a resolution authorizing the mayor to sign an agreement with Center for Public Safety Management LLC to aid in interviews, assessment and evaluations related to the selection of a new police chief for the city of Alabaster.

Alabaster’s agreement with Center for Public Safety Management is in the amount of $21,000, exclusive of travel, billed in two installments with 50 percent upon signage of the contract and 50 percent upon completion of the assessment center.

“Our police chief is one of the most important positions in the city,” Council President Sophie Martin said. “(It’s) one that we really uphold, and we really want to do the hiring process right. Having a partnership (and) having this company in place will make sure that that process is done correctly.”
