NORTHPORT – The Thompson Warriors were in full command of their opening matches of area play as the boys and girls soccer teams took a pair of dominant shutouts on the road in Northport.

Thompson’s boys defeated the Tuscaloosa County Wildcats 5-0 before the girls took a 12-0 win to finish the night on Wednesday, March 5 at Tuscaloosa County High School.

In the boys game, Aram Arreola continued his strong freshman campaign with four goals as he led the way for the offense.

Arreola got the attack going after senior captain Erick Huerta sent a through ball to Arreola for the opening goal of the match.

That goal gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead at the halftime break, but they continued to snowball their momentum on the offensive end in the second half.

Arreola secured his brace early in the second half thanks to a chance from another senior captain in Dylan Ruiz, doubling up the lead to 2-0 in the process.

Then, Arreola scored his third goal of the match after sophomore Colton Burnett dished out an assist, giving Arreola a natural hat trick with three unanswered goals and Thompson a 3-0 lead.

The Warriors would get another chance to extend their lead thanks to a penalty kick opportunity. Dylan Ruiz stepped up to the spot and delivered to put the visitors up 4-0.

Thompson wasn’t done though as Dylan Huerta and Arreola connected to give Arreola his fourth goal of the game and put the finishing touches on the 5-0 win.

Arreola’s four goals in the win were joined by Ruiz’s goal and an assist while Burnett and the Huertas each had an assist.

As for the girls, they wasted little time finding the back of the net and scoring the goals they needed to end the match early. The Warriors didn’t allow a single goal through on the defense and scored early and often on the offensive end.

As a result, they cracked double digits ahead of the halftime break and added another pair of goals to finish with 12 goals when the final whistle blew at the 40-minute mark.

The Montiel-Duenas sisters were in dominant form throughout the match as Dia and Luna Montiel-Duenas each had a hat trick in the win. Dia also finished with a team-high three goals while Luna added an assist to her three goals.

Helena Adan earned two goals and an assist, Charli Gantt secured a goal and two assists and Guilia Wekesa and Nathalie Gonzalez each finished with a goal and an assist. Carlie Mills rounded out the scoring with a goal while Ellie Pratt had two assists and Lynsey Schlup also earned an assist in the victory.

With the wins, both the boys and girls improved to 7-3-1 overall and 1-0 in area play. The Thompson boys will travel to Helena to face the Huskies on Thursday, March 6 at 7 p.m. while the girls will host the Benjamin Russell Wildcats at Warrior Stadium at the same time.
