CHELSEA – In their first-ever game as the No. 1 team in Class 6A, the Chelsea Hornets proved why they deserve to be on top of the polls with a decisive victory to kick off action in March.
Chelsea took down the Fultondale Wildcats 3-0 on Monday, March 3, using its potent offensive attack to earn another victory, extending its winning streak to six games.
The Hornets took a while to get the gears rolling, but once their energy showed up, it never left the field at Chelsea High School.
In the 25th minute of the game, sophomore Daniel Teixeira continued his solid year and took a service from Elijah Huggins and tapped in past the Wildcats goalie to put Chelsea up 1-0 and give it a solid starting sequence.
As time continued to tick down before the end of the first half, the Hornets wanted to add some padding onto their lead, which is exactly what they did.
In the 37th minute, senior star Max Wever was on the other end of a serve from Marcus Garcia and finished with a solid shot, extending the lead to 2-0. Garcia later hit the post right before the half, but could not get it through as Chelsea went into the break with a comfortable cushion
However, even though the score was in a solid place, the Hornets still wanted to add on.
Shortly out of the break, Chelsea received a corner kick opportunity and a chance to do just that. The corner went long, but Wever gathered it and chipped into the far side of the netting to put the Hornets up 3-0 and that much closer to another victory.
Following the goal, the game became stagnant and quiet as neither team did much more. Chelsea got one more opportunity as Jacob Cano struck one in towards the goal before watching it bounce off the post.
Before long, the final whistle sounded and the Hornets cruised out with the three-goal win.
With the victory, Chelsea improves to 8-1 on the year and heads into area play with a burst of momentum. The Hornets will begin their area schedule with a home contest against the Spain Park Jaguars on Friday, March 7 at Chelsea High School. The game will kick off at 7 p.m.
