ALABASTER – In a clash of two of the top softball teams in the state of Alabama, the Thompson Warriors got the better of the defending Class 7A state champions.
Thompson beat the Hewitt-Trussville Huskies 11-2 on Wednesday, March 5 at Thompson High School in a big offensive showing for the hosts.
However, it was the Huskies who struck first as they launched a solo home run on the first at-bat of the game to go up 1-0.
Kadyn Bush got three straight outs after that to get to the bottom half of the inning, when a walk and an Olivia Tindell single put runners on the corners with no outs. While the next batter popped out, a sacrifice fly from Bush tied up the game at 1-1.
The Warriors offense then put together a pair of big innings at the plate to pull away for the victories.
After two of the first three batters of the bottom of the second hit singles, Blakely Davis took the plate as a pinch hitter and drove in the go-ahead run off an RBI single. From there, a fielder’s choice play and a steal of home took the lead to 4-1 at the end of the inning.
Bush and Aubree Hooks started out the bottom of the third with back-to-back singles before a bunt single by Mallory Flournoy made the lead 5-1. The Warriors then loaded up the bases ahead of four-straight scoring plays.
Josie Hamm got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before a sacrifice fly plated the seventh run. Tindell and Morgan Adolphus then hit RBI singles on back-to-back pitches to go up 9-1 through three innings.
Thompson then capitalized off a pair of lead-off walks in the bottom of the fourth with a pinch-hit RBI single from Ansley Haynes.
Hewitt got a run back in the top of the fifth when a lead-off single turned into a run off a sacrifice fly after a pair of passed ball. The Warriors wouldn’t allow a single run after that though and capped off the scoring with another RBI single from Davis for the 11-2 win.
Tindell finished 2-for-4 with two RBI while Davis was 2-for-3 with her pair of RBI singles. Adolphus went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.
Bush took the win in the circle with five strikeouts across 5.1 innings against two runs, four hits and no walks.
Thompson improved to 13-1 with the win and will be in tournament action on March 7 and 8 in the Jag Classic at the Hoover Met Complex. The Warriors will face Southside-Gadsden and Saint James in pool play on Friday, March 7.
