The Alabama Sports Writers Association released its annual All-State basketball teams on Saturday, March 15 honoring the best of the best from around the state, and Shelby County can lay claim to nine of those spots along with a Coach of the Year selection.
Chelsea’s Haley Trotter and Aiden Owens, Pelham’s Tee King, Shelby County’s Kenna’d Buie, Briarwood Christian’s Drew Mears and Emma Kerley, Montevallo’s Dee Cutts, Vincent’s KK McGinnis and Cornerstone Christian’s Zeke Adams each earned places on their respective classification’s All-State basketball teams.
In addition, the media named Chelsea girls basketball coach Jason Harlow as its 6A girls basketball Coach of the Year. Harlow led the Hornets to a historic first trip to the Class 6A state championship game after making their first Final Four trip since 2021 and winning the regional and area championships.
The reigning Shelby County Coach of the Year for his work in last season’s 7A Elite Eight run, Harlow is also in the running for 6A girls basketball Coach of the Year from the Alabama Association of Basketball Coaches.
As for the players though, Trotter secured a place on the Class 6A girls First Team after making the Class 7A girls Second Team and winning Shelby County Player of the Year a season ago.
Trotter ended her Hornets career by averaging 17.7 points, nine rebounds and 2.1 assists per game, becoming the all-time program leader in points and rebounds in the process. She also earned All-Area, All-Regional, All-State Tournament and Alabama All-Star honors.
Joining Trotter on the 6A girls First Team is Pelham guard Tee King. This is King’s first selection to the First Team and second All-State honor in her career after she made the All-State Second Team as a sophomore in 2023-24.
In a year when she took the reins as the team’s primary scorer, King averaged 19.3 points, 4.8 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game along with 70 steals as she took a spot on the All-Area team.
Over on the boys side, Chelsea’s Owens finished out his career with a Class 6A boys Second Team selection for All-State. The 6-foot-4 forward dominated all areas of the court and finished the year with 16.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists en route to spots on the All-Area and All-Regional teams, including Area Tournament MVP.
Shelby County made its return to the All-State team in 2025 thanks to a standout campaign from a middle-schooler in Buie. The seventh-grader made the Class 5A girls Second Team for her first All-State spot.
The Area Tournament MVP and All-Regional selection averaged a double-double, including a county-high 19.8 points and 10.7 rebounds per game along with 2.1 assists a game and 98 total steals. She played a key role in the Wildcats’ run to an area title and the Sweet 16.
Briarwood had two selections to the All-State basketball teams with Mears representing the Lions on the boys side. He earned his second-straight All-State honor with a spot on the 5A boys Second Team after making the 6A boys Third Team a year ago.
Mears was one of the county’s most electric shooters once again, averaging 19.4 points per game to become the school’s all-time leading scorer as just a junior. He also averaged 3.6 assists and three rebounds per game while making the All-Area team.
He was joined by the key member of the Lady Lions’ Elite Eight run in Kerley. The junior forward made the Class 5A girls Third Team for her first All-State selection.
In a year when she received All-Area and All-Regional selections, Kerley averaged 14.6 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game in addition to 64 total blocks. She also became the school’s all-time leading scorer for girls basketball during her past campaign.
Montevallo’s Cutts secured his school’s first All-State selection in Class 5A for boys sports after he received an Honorable Mention for Class 5A boys basketball.
The 6-foot-4 senior forward played a key role in the Bulldogs’ historic run to the Elite Eight by averaging 17.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. He also received All-Area and All-Regional honors.
Vincent’s McGinnis finished her career with her first All-State selection as she received an Honorable Mention for Class 2A girls basketball.
The Talladega College signee averaged a double-double with 15.3 points, 13.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game along with 63 total steals and 47 total blocks.
Down in the AISA, Cornerstone has an All-State player for the second-straight year after Adams received his first selection to the AISA boys Second Team.
The senior led the Chargers to the Class A Final Four by averaging a double-double of 20.3 points and 11.9 rebounds per game along with 3.4 assists an outing.
The ASWA will release its Player of the Year finalists next week with the Mr. and Miss Basketball banquet to follow on Thursday, April 17 at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel.
The Shelby County Reporter will name its All-County basketball teams for AHSAA schools in the weeks to follow.
