ONEONTA – The Thompson Warriors were in top form on Tuesday, March 18 as they went on the road and secured a pair of strong victories.

Thompson’s girls soccer team defeated the Oneonta Redskins 11-1 ahead of a 3-1 victory by the varsity boys to get them back on track with a win away from home at Oneonta High School.

The girls entered the night on a six-match win streak, during which they rose to the No. 10 ranking in the Class 7A girls soccer coaches poll. Taking on a Class 4A opponent, the Warriors showcased their talent against a team from a lower classification.

Just like their meeting in 2024 at Warrior Stadium, Thompson’s offense kept putting goals past the Oneonta defense as it continued to ramp up the pressure as the match went on.

However, the Warriors surrendered a goal on the defensive end, meaning they had to work a little harder on the offensive side of the pitch to end the game due to the mercy rule.

Thompson kept its foot on the gas though and finished the match before the 80-minute mark by scoring 11 goals on the Redskins defense versus the one goal that the hosts could muster.

A pair of hat tricks powered the Warriors to the victory as Charli Gantt and Holland Button each finished with three goals apiece. Gantt also added an assist to her total to contribute to four of the 11 goals.

Dia Montiel-Duenas topped that with six different goal contributions as she fired two goals into the back of the net and assisted on four other scores throughout the match.

Like Gantt, Nathalie Gonzalez chipped in on four of the goals as she scored one goal and ended the night with three assists.

Luna Montiel-Duenas and Guilia Wekesa scored the other two goals to finish the match with a goal apiece. Helena Adan had two assists in the victory while Mary Webb Mazingo secured an assist as well.

As for the boys, they entered the night needing a bounce-back win after losing their last two matches against top-10 opposition.

The Warriors lost 2-1 on the road at No. 7 Hewitt-Trussville on Tuesday, March 11 and then lost to MaxPreps’ No. 4 team in the country, the Prattville Lions, 2-0 on Friday, March 14.

Thompson did face a bit of adversity in the match at Oneonta as it let a goal slip past the defense, allowing the hosts to gain a bit of traction in the process.

However, that would be the Redskins’ lone bright spot of the match as the Warriors scored three goals across the 80-minute game to secure the 3-1 victory and get back to winning ways.

Thompson’s girls improved to 11-3-1 on the year while the boys are now 9-5-1. The girls will return to the pitch on Thursday, March 20 at 6:30 p.m. on the road against No. 1 Vestavia Hills.

Both varsity teams will be in action on Friday, March 21 when the Warriors hit the road to Tuscaloosa to face the Hillcrest Patriots in area play. The girls will kick off at 5 p.m. before the boys play at 6:30 p.m. at Hillcrest High School.
