MCCALLA – With hopes of continuing their area success, the Helena Huskies let nothing get in the way of both their boys and girls soccer teams handling another road test.

Helena won its doubleheader with the McAdory Yellow Jackets on Tuesday, March 18 at McAdory High School, with the girls claiming a 5-0 victory while the boys won 5-1.

The girls got their momentum going early on in the first half, making a statement to not let McAdory get into the game at any point.

The scoring action got started in the 14th minute with a chaotic sequence. Eighth grader Hannah Brunson put a through pass just inside the 18-yard box to Baileigh Rumage who took a shot. While the ball was on the way towards the keeper, Henley Havens got her foot on the ball, changing the direction enough to get it past the goalie and into the back of the net to put the Huskies up 1-0.

Just moments later in the 16th minute, Kate Hendrix dribbled the ball through both lines of Yellow Jackets defenders and took a shot from outside the 18-yard box, recording a loud goal to quickly extend the lead to 2-0.

Helena kept its offensive successes going in the 25th minute as Havens provided an assist to Rumage, who scored another big goal to make it 3-0 game before the half.

Coming out of the break, the offensive power continued for the Huskies, who did not let the foot off the gas. In the 44th minute, Ava Garner sent a returned corner kick back across the goal, and after the ball hit off of a defender, Hendrix cleaned it up to score her second goal of the game to put the score at 4-0.

Helena later capped the game off in the 69th minute of action, as a shot from Rumage from 30 yards hit the post, which was cleaned up by Havens and put in the net to secure a hat trick and another area win for her squad.

The boys game was almost just as decisive as the girls game, however, the scoring took a while to commence.

It was not until the 34th minute that the Huskies were able to break the scoreless tie, as Austin Lewis broke into the clear, and with just the goalkeeper standing in his way, put it past and into the goal to go up 1-0.

That goal sparked a burst of energy in Helena’s offense, which gained some insurance heading into the break. In the 39th, Agustin Rodriguez got his head on the ball and put it in to extend the lead to 2-0 just before the half.

Rodriguez was not done there though. Coming out of the break in the 45th minute and driving down the field, he got his foot on the ball after a deflection and scored once again, quickly making the score 3-0.

Rodriguez then continued his phenomenal night in the 60th minute off a goal kick that was won, beating defenders and the McAdory goalkeeper to record a hat trick of his own, allowing the Huskies to begin running away with things and hold a 4-0 advantage.

Devon Sasser later capped things off with a free kick from the 20-yard line, putting it in the center of the goal to make the score 5-0 and secure a win for the boys.

With the hat tricks from Havens and Rodriguez, both the boys and girls teams move to 2-0 in area play, giving them a big advantage early on in the standings. Overall, the girls improve to 5-6-2 while the boys go to 5-6-1.

Both of Helena’s teams now prepare for their next area contests, each against Bessemer City at home on Thursday, March 20 at Helena High School. The girls kick off at 5 p.m., while the boys kick off at 7 p.m.
