NORTH SHELBY – With positive momentum and a winning streak sitting on their shoulders, the Briarwood Christian Lions did everything they could to keep that trend going in area play.

Briarwood defeated the Spain Park Jaguars 4-1 on Tuesday, March 18 at Briarwood Christian School, controlling the game from start to finish to pick up its third area win of the season, placing it firmly on top of the area standings.

However, the final score was not indicative of how the entire game went. Both teams were in a competitive battle for the vast majority of the first half, with neither team finding the exact moment necessary in order to get on the scoreboard.

Just before halftime though, the Lions got their moment. In the 37th minute action, Sawyer Felton got a free kick opportunity, which he put into the back of the net and gave his team a 1-0 advantage heading into the break.

Shortly after the beginning of the second half, Briarwood got another opportunity on a set piece to extend its lead, and ultimately did just that. On a Lions corner kick, Cam Harrington got his head on the ball and put it past Spain Park’s George Everly for a goal, making it a 2-0 game.

Briarwood later pushed its lead even further, as in the 50th minute, it got a third goal, beginning to put the nail in the coffin.

Spain Park then got one goal back in the 61st minute on a penalty kick, making it 3-1, but the Lions answered that push down the stretch to end the game at 4-1 and keep their undefeated area record alive.

The win was Briarwood’s second in its four-game home stand that is important with four of its last six games of the regular season coming on the road, including its final game of the regular season at Oak Mountain.

The Lions carried that momentum from the win into the third of its four home games to defeat Bayside Academy 4-2, extending its win streak to six.

Briarwood will play its final game of its four-game home stand against the Hewitt-Trussville Huskies, looking to continue improving on its 11-4 record. The game will be played on Tuesday, April 1 and will kick off at 7:30 p.m.
