The Shelby County Democratic Party is now in the closing process of acquiring a property that will serve as the organization’s first permanent office location in decades.

“In the most exciting local news, we are in the process of leasing office space for the Shelby County Democratic Party,” said Dr. Marsha Sturdevant, chair of the Shelby County Democratic Party. “Our offer has been accepted by the property’s leasing agent, and we are now completing the paperwork phase of the process.”

Located at 211 Yeager Pkwy in Pelham, the newly acquired office space sits just off of Pelham Parkway and is near such businesses as Brookwood Motors, Summer Classics and UAB Callahan Eye Clinic.

According to Donald Mottern, a member of the Shelby County Democratic Party’s Executive Committee, the lease of a new office space is a major move in the reestablishment of the Democratic Party’s presence in Shelby County.

“To my knowledge, this is the first office location that the Shelby County Democratic Party has had since even before its restructuring in 2015,” Mottern said. “Outside of short term rental locations, where we have managed phone banks in the leadup to past elections, there has not been a reliably permanent location where party work could be performed and organized in quite some time.”

The SCDP’s new office will share the building with only one other tenant, with the SCDP’s side of the building featuring an independent reception area, four office/meeting rooms and storage areas that will house the organization’s materials. SCDP leadership has also highlighted the presence of an outside parking area that will allow for the possible hosting of on-site donation drives in the future.

“We are all incredibly excited for this Pelham location because it will serve as a basecamp for our mission to spread membership and grow the public face of our party,” Mottern said. “With this new property, members of our community will be able to see us hard at work and know for a fact that we are present and active within the county.”

SCDP leadership has confirmed that they will take possession of the property and begin moving into the building on April 1.
