MONTEVALLO – The Montevallo City Council approved a resolution for the purpose of remodeling the James D. Seaman Scout Lodge during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, March 24.

The meeting also saw the council appoint Sharon Gilbert, George Henry and Melinda Nix to the Montevallo Personnel Board, with their terms set to expire in 2028. At the end of the meeting, the council entered an executive session to discuss an investment proposal from the Shelby County Board of Education.

The meeting began with a work session at 5:30 p.m. Each member of the council gave reports on the various committees they oversee. Councilmember David King thanked Adele Nelson for hosting the Montevallo Chamber of Commerce’s monthly luncheon on Wednesday, March 19, which honored the first responders of Montevallo.

“When you sit there and you go through everything that’s transpired in public safety over the last four years, it’s really amazing,” King said. “The equipment we’ve purchased, the personnel we’ve added, I think (the city) is going in a positive direction.”

Mary Elizabeth House, the junior mayor and leader of the Montevallo Junior City Council, shared that Dee Cutts, a basketball player for Montevallo High School, received All-State honors for Class 5A boys’ basketball.

“He averaged 17.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, and he also received All-Area and All-Regional honors,” House said. “We are very proud of him.”

Courtney Bennett, the executive director of Montevallo Main Street, announced that the Friday Nights at the Cove concert series will return beginning on Friday, April 25.

“Our first concert of the year is going to be The Ringers, and they were here in 2023,” Bennett said. “They are a great classic rock band out of Birmingham, so we are very excited about that.”

Bennett also detailed the fourth annual Spring Fling Family Food Truck Fest, which will be held the next day on Saturday, April 26.

“We have seven food trucks confirmed right now, and we are hoping for 12 (at the event),” Bennett said.

After the work session, the council meeting began with the council unanimously approving the resolution to remodel the James D. Seaman Scout Lodge. The resolution authorizes Montevallo to apply for a Community Development Block Grant via Shelby County to remodel the lodge.

The council then unanimously approved the board appointments to the Montevallo Personnel Board and subsequently entered executive session, concluding the meeting.
