As spring break tournaments roll on across the Southeast, multiple local teams saw movement in the latest edition of the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s baseball and softball media rankings.

When the second edition of the rankings released on Thursday, March 27, the Thompson Warriors, Chelsea Hornets, Helena Huskies and Spain Park Jaguars had both their baseball and softball teams ranked in their respective top 10s.

Two things remained the same though: the Vincent Yellow Jackets being the county’s top baseball team and Thompson as the area’s top softball team.

The Warriors remain atop the softball poll with a 23-2 record. Thompson had just one game during the last rankings period, but it was a big one as it outlasted Hartselle in a 1-0 showdown on Thursday, March 20.

The Warriors also moved up to No. 20 in MaxPreps’ national softball rankings, remaining one of only two Alabama teams ranked in the top 25 alongside defending national champion Orange Beach.

Chelsea is the top-ranked 6A softball team as it moved up one spot to No. 3 in the rankings. The Hornets survived a nine-inning battle with Helena as they won 8-7 in a crucial area matchup to move to 17-8-1.

Chelsea also started off the Gulf Coast Classic III with three wins as it defeated Good Hope 13-0, Rehobeth 4-1 and Vernon Hills 11-1 on Tuesday, March 25 in the opening day of the tournament.

The Huskies remained at No. 7 after losing to Chelsea in a tight area game, their lone game of the ranking period and dropped to 14-7-2 on the year.

Spain Park bumped up one spot to No. 8 after falling 2-1 to Class 5A No. 1 Springville and going 3-2 in the Auburn Round Robin. The now-17-12 Jags beat Rogers, Beulah and Scottsboro before losing to Sparkman and Auburn.

Shelby County and Cornerstone Christian were also nominated for their respective softball rankings. Vincent dropped out of the softball top 10 after losing to Southeastern in area play.

As for baseball, Vincent remains the top ranked baseball team as it held at No. 2 in the Class 2A rankings. The Jackets finished off an area-series sweep of Westminster OM with a 9-0 road win on Wednesday, March 19 before losing on the road to Georgia’s Bowdon 8-1.

Vincent then dominated three opponents from higher classifications at a showcase at Oxford’s Choccolocco Park, beating Jacksonville, Childersburg and Holly Pond over the course of two days to improve to 17-5 on the year.

Thompson bumped up one spot in the Class 7A rankings to No. 8 with a 18-11 record. The Warriors earned four wins over out-of-state teams, first Tupelo in Hoover before beating Gulliver, South Hills and Whitney Young to start spring break tournament play in Nashville.

Thompson also lost at the Hoover Bucs and against Oak Park-River Forest in the spring break tournament.

Just like softball, Chelsea, Spain Park and Helena are each in the Class 6A baseball top 10.

The Jags are the highest ranked team of the group at No. 3 after beating John Carroll Catholic 14-11 and finishing an area series win over Chelsea with an 8-3 road victory to improve to 12-7.

That series result made the Hornets and Spain Park switch spots as Chelsea is now No. 4 in Class 6A. The Hornets bounced back from those losses to the Jags with a 12-0 win over Waverly Central at the Gulf Coast Classic III to improve to 13-9.

Helena rounded out the top 10 by remaining at No. 7 with an area series sweep of the Pelham Panthers, first winning 4-0 on the road before taking an 11-1 victory at home. The Huskies then defeated Opelika 7-5 and headed into spring break with a 13-8 record.

Pelham dropped from the top 10 as a result of the losses to Helena, and Shelby County was also nominated in Class 5A.
