MONTEVALLO – The city of Montevallo is set to participate in Shelby County’s free dump day on Saturday, March 29.
From 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Montevallo residents can bring their items to the Montevallo Recycling Center at 1120 Overland Road. Montevallo’s Public Works Department will take trash from the Recycling Center to the Shelby County Landfill free of charge.
Montevallo residents also have the option of taking their items directly to the Shelby County Landfill. The landfill does not accept hazardous waste, automobile batteries, vehicle tires, liquid wastes or vehicles.
Kirk Hamby, Montevallo’s director of public works, stated the event almost always runs in tandem with the Shelby County Landfill’s free dump days.
“We piggyback off of the Shelby County Landfill’s free dump days, so it doesn’t cost the city to get rid of things within the city,” Hamby said. “Our residents aren’t having to wait in line at the Shelby County Landfill… it eliminates waste and debris around people’s properties and town.”
The Shelby County Landfill holds free dump days twice a year, with this year’s installments coming on Saturday, March 29 and Saturday, October 4. Hamby and Montevallo plan to hold their own dump days in tandem with each event, and have been doing so for 20-plus years.
