ALABASTER – After another blazing start to the season that saw them earn a spot in the national top 20, the Thompson Warriors have set their sights on the top spot in the area.

They got off to a strong start in pursuit of that goal on Tuesday, April 1, earning a 9-2 win over the Tuscaloosa County Wildcats at Thompson High School in their area opener.

Thompson went right to work with four runs in the bottom of the first. After Olivia Tindell reached second on an error, Aubrey Bauer brought her home with an RBI single to open up a 1-0 lead. That was the first of three-straight hits, the last of which was an RBI double from Hannah Hobbs to double up the lead.

Two batters later, Morgan Adolphus stepped to the plate with two on and two out and ripped a line drive single to center, scoring both runners and taking the lead to 4-0 ahead of the end of the inning.

A wild pitch in the top of the second inning let Tuscaloosa County cut the deficit to 4-1, but the Warriors extended their lead soon after that.

After an error put Kadyn Bush aboard with one out in the third, Hobbs came up big again, this time going yard off a 1-0 pitch to go up 6-1. Thompson would get two aboard after that thanks to a pair of singles, but it couldn’t add any more runs to the lead during the inning.

Following a scoreless fourth, the Warriors resumed the scoring in the bottom half of the fifth. Hobbs continued her perfect day with a one-out single, and two batters later, Adolphus brought her home with another strong line drive to center. That gave her a double before she came home on the ensuing at-bat, which produced an infield error off a ground ball from Destinee Ealy.

Thompson got a pair aboard in the bottom of the sixth to set up Hobbs with a two-on, two-out situation. Her fly ball led to an error from the Wildcats second baseman and brought Burden home for the 9-1 lead.

Tuscaloosa County scored off an RBI single in the top of the seventh, but the Warriors got two of the next three batters out to seal the 9-2 win.

Hobbs finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs. Adolphus went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run, and Bush was 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs.

Aubree Hooks, Autumn Ingle and Bush combined to give up just one earned run between them as Hooks struck out a trio of batters in the first three innings and Ingle pitched a scoreless fourth and fifth innings before Bush saw out the victory.

Thompson improved to 23-2 overall and 1-0 in area play with the win. The two teams will be back in action on Thursday, April 3 at 4:30 p.m. as they square off in the back half of the series at Tuscaloosa County High School.
