BLOUNTSVILLE – The Chelsea Hornets returned from their spring break hiatus to a big result as they defeated the Susan Moore Bulldogs in a road contest.
Chelsea defeated Susan Moore 9-1 on Tuesday, April 1 at Susan Moore High School as it pulled away with six second-half goals.
While Susan Moore had moments of quality as the No. 3 team in Class 1A-3A, the Class 6A No. 2 Hornets showcased their multi-classification advantage throughout the match.
Chelsea opened up the scoring off a throw-in from Cooper Baumbaugh as he found Luke Miller, who headed the ball into the net for the opening goal.
Four minutes later, Jacob Cano collected the ball and fired a long shot into the back of the net to double up the lead.
Daniel Teixeira finished off the first-half scoring, taking a pass from Parker Dean and just poking the ball across the line while going to ground. That gave Chelsea a 3-0 lead that it would see out through the halftime break.
However, the Bulldogs would be the first to score in the second half as they got a breakaway chance early in the half and converted, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
Chelsea restored its lead just two minutes later as Baumbaugh had his second assist off a throw-in on the night. Dean fired the shot home this time to increase the lead to 4-1.
Jacob Cano finished off the rapid-fire scoring sequence with his second goal of the night, this time off his left foot for the 5-1 lead.
Cano also played a key part in the Hornets’ sixth goal of the match as he sent a ball in to Campbell Jenkins who took care of the rest.
Chelsea got another big chance thanks to a corner kick less than 10 minutes after Jenkins’ goal. After Teixeira took the corner, Elijah Huggins jumped and headed the ball in over the Susan Moore defense to make the lead 7-1.
The Hornets would score once more before capping off the night with a Cayden Nix goal off a Jenkins through ball that sealed the 9-1 win.
Chelsea improved to 14-2 with the win and will resume area play on Friday, April 4 at 7 p.m. against the Briarwood Christian Lions as the Hornets look to move into a tie for first place in Class 6A, Area 8.
