Indian Springs continues perfect area run as boys, girls beat Shelby County

INDIAN SPRINGS VILLAGE – Indian Springs continued its strong run through Class 5A, Area 8 as both the boys and girls teams secured season-series sweeps against the Shelby County Wildcats.

In the second leg of their county battle, Springs’ girls secured the 10-0 victory over the Wildcats ahead of a 7-0 victory for the boys against Shelby County on Tuesday, April 1 at Indian Springs School.

The wins move both of Indian Springs’ teams to 6-0 in area play as they look to finish area play undefeated. A victory in their next area match on Friday, April 11 against Northside will clinch the area title and book a home first-round game in the playoffs.

In the girls match, the No. 7-ranked Springs’ offense put consistent pressure on Shelby County and racked up 10 goals over the course of the match.

Three of those goals came from Ashna Mehra as the star sophomore continued her strong campaign with a hat trick. She also added two assists as she played a part in five of the 10 Indian Springs goals on the evening.

Two other Springs players finished with multiple goals as Caitlyn Yang secured two goals and an assist while Mia Phillips joined her with a brace as she also scored a pair of goals.

Ellie Lynn Martin, Violet Levine and Simone Bermudez rounded out the scoring with a goal apiece as Indian Springs hit the double-digit mark on the scoreboard.

Springs also secured a clean sheet on the defensive end to take the 10-goal victory before the 80-minute mark elapsed.

The boys went the full distance as Shelby County kept the game from getting too far out of hand and fall by the mercy rule. However, goalkeepers Forrest Crawford and Marcus Edwards combined for the clean sheet for Indian Springs to set its offense up for big things.

Alex Hage once again led the offense for the No. 2 team in Class 5A as the sophomore scored three goals on the night to bring him up to 26 on the season.

One of the senior captains, Erik Ledvina, joined him with multiple goals in the victory as he finished the night with two goals, but he also earned three assists to play a part in five of the seven goals his team scored.

Gus Giattina and Isaiah Colorado also scored goals against the Wildcats to as part of the win.

Avery Biga led Indian Springs in assists as the other senior captain finished the match with three assists, with junior Comer Goodrich earning the other assist.

Indian Springs’ boys improved to 12-2-2 with the win while the girls are now 8-2-2 overall to pair with the perfect area records for both teams. They will be back in action on Friday, April 4 against the Pell City Panthers with the girls playing at 5 p.m. and the boys at 7 p.m.

After testing themselves against a pair of top 10 teams in the classification, Shelby County’s boys dropped to 3-6 overall while the girls are 3-4 in varsity contests. Both are 2-4 in area play with two area contests remaining.

The Wildcats boys will return to action on Monday, April 7 on the road against the Cornerstone Schools of Alabama Eagles for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.

Both teams will play together next on Thursday, April 10 as part of their penultimate area game against the Montevallo Bulldogs with the girls beginning at 5 p.m. and the boys starting at 7 p.m. at Papa McCombs Stadium.
