MONTEVALLO – Sen. April Weaver has been awarded the inaugural University of Montevallo Momentum Award.
Presented by University of Montevallo President John W. Stewart III, the award was founded this year to recognize individuals who have advanced the mission and reputation of the university through leadership, service, advocacy and meaningful contributions.
“On behalf of the University of Montevallo, I would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Senator April Weaver for her unwavering support of our nursing program,” Stewart said. “Her leadership and dedication to enhancing healthcare education in Alabama have made a profound impact on our students and the communities they serve. Sen. Weaver’s commitment to advancing nursing education ensures that we continue to prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals who will make a difference in the lives of many.”
Weaver, the former regional director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the only licensed nurse currently serving in the Alabama Legislature, has advocated for the nursing profession. Her leadership inside and outside the State House has made a lasting impact on healthcare education in Alabama.
“The University of Montevallo’s Nursing Program sets the standard for higher education by providing our future healthcare leaders with exceptional education and experiences that prepare them for a successful career,” Weaver said.. “I am honored to receive the Momentum Award and look forward to continuing to work alongside the University to ensure its continued success in shaping the future of Alabama.”
Weaver passed the Alabama Board of Nursing’s Compact to allow nurses to work across state lines in an effort to address nursing shortages. She also sponsored legislation to provide loans to nurses seeking advanced-practice degrees in return for working in medically underserved areas of the state.
The University of Montevallo offers both a pre-licensure BSN track and an RN to BSN track through the College of Health Professions.
