CALERA – The joyful screams of children running around on the playground echoed about the courtyard as residents excitedly sat down to devour pounds of shrimp and crawfish during the opening First Friday of the year in Calera.

Running for its fifth year, Calera Main Street’s First Friday summer festival series kicked off on Friday, April 4 with a crawfish boil from 6-10 p.m.

“It was great to see such a big turnout and to see the citizens coming out to support the event as well as visiting tourists,” Calera City Council member Debbie Byers said.

Presented by Calera Main Street and Red Mountain Crawfish Company, attendees had the chance to enjoy an authentic Cajun/Creole feast featuring fresh crawfish and shrimp mixed with Southern flavors.

“We love the atmosphere, we love all of the smiles and we love seeing the kids out there having fun and the parents sitting back,” Council member Calvin Morgan said. “Everybody seems like they’re just enjoying themselves.”

Additionally, visitors enjoyed live music by Susannah Seales and a selection of food trucks and vendors which were spread across the Calera Courtyard. Visitors were also able to shop at local Main Street staples such as Adventurer’s Coffee Co. and R.O.E. Hobby.

“This is the atmosphere that we’re trying to create for our city,” Morgan said. “We ask that the citizens continue to support this.”

The next installment of First Friday will take place on Friday, May 2 with Calera’s Got Talent. Sponsored by Shelby County Newsmedia, the event will feature a night of entertainment that highlights local talent with live performances and music from a DJ to keep the energy high between acts. Guests can also partake in food trucks, games and a series of vendors.

“It’s just a fantastic opportunity for families to come out for an event, enjoy great fellowship and mingle with everybody,” Byers said.
