PELHAM – The Pelham High School Class of 2025 got to embrace their inner youth as they prepare to enter a new phase of life at the school’s Senior Field Day.

The day featured relay races and friendly competitions, creating a sense of camaraderie amongst the senior class.

Julie Nelson, an anatomy/physiology and marine science teacher at PHS, is a senior class sponsor with the school. Nelson, along with her fellow senior class sponsors, played a critical role in organizing the Senior Field Day and other special events for seniors each year.

Nelson outlined what makes Pelham’s Senior Field Day special, as well as the logistics of the event.

“Senior Field Day is similar to the old-fashioned elementary school field day,” Nelson said. “It is an opportunity for students to create teams with original names and uniforms then challenge other teams in ‘minute to win it’ type games.”

The teams this year included Team Madagascar, with members dressed as different animals from the film franchise; Team To Infinity and Beyond, with members dressed as characters from the “Toy Story” franchise and Team Magnificent Minions, with members dressed as Minions and Gru from the “Despicable Me” franchise.

Nelson outlined some of the games featured, adding that they were designed to be lighthearted and easily accessible.

“The games are simple, silly games that incorporate small amounts of skill and large amounts of luck,” Nelson said.

Games included Face Time, where individuals race to move a cookie placed on their foreheads into their mouths without using their hands or receiving help from a teammate. Other games included KaBroom, where the goal is to hit a marshmallow using a broom and have a teammate catch the marshmallow using a cup. The team with the most outs wins.

“We also incorporate traditional team-type relays at the beginning and end of the competition: three-legged race, team skis, wheelbarrow race, sprints and an egg and spoon race,” Nelson said.

Nelson also outlined the involvement of the National Guard Reserve, key supporters of the event.

“The National Guard Reserve brought more fun with a climbing wall, football toss, tug-o-war and several other activities,” Nelson said. “Their involvement makes the day much more enjoyable, and we are always appreciative of their contributions and time.”

Nelson concluded by emphasizing the joy expressed at the event is always the biggest highlight.

“Watching our students laugh and enjoy each other’s company makes the day enjoyable to those of us working,” Nelson said.
