PELHAM – On Tuesday, March 18, Pelham High School held its annual Honor Society Induction Ceremony, recognizing overall excellence throughout the institution’s student body.
“The auditorium was filled with proud families, friends and faculty as we celebrated the accomplishments of our outstanding students,” read a Facebook post from Pelham City Schools. “A total of 263 students were inducted into the Pelham High School chapters of several prestigious honor societies, each one a reflection of their hard work, dedication and academic excellence.”
Honor societies represented at the ceremony included Mu Alpha Theta, National Art Honor Society, National English Honor Society, National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society.
Tonya Hatch, a PHS English and creative writing teacher, serves as the National English Honor Society’s sponsor. She, along with the other society sponsors, plays a key role in organizing the ceremony each year.
Hatch outlined the significance of hosting the ceremony on an annual basis.
“This ceremony is a chance for us to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of our students,” Hatch said. “It is a moment to celebrate all that these students have achieved academically.”
She also described how honor societies benefit students both academically and personally.
“Academically, honor societies benefit students by allowing them to be recognized for their outstanding academic achievements in high school,” Hatch said. “Personally, students have something that they can add to their resume or college applications. They also receive things like honor cords that are worn during graduation.”
Hatch concluded by outlining the hard work and dedication required to be recognized at a national level.
“To achieve the academic qualifications to be in an honor society, students must exemplify conscientiousness, thoroughness and academic responsibility,” Hatch said. “They have to be in school, work at a high level and be motivated to achieve at a high level.”
