ALABASTER – For the last seven years, the Thompson Warriors have chased a return to the promised land of the girls soccer postseason. Now, the wait is over, and they made history in the process.

For the first time in Class 7A, Thompson won the area championship with a 4-0 win over the Prattville Lions on Tuesday, April 8 at Warrior Stadium.

The championship ends an 11-year title drought for the Warriors as their last area title came in 2014 as a member of Class 6A, which was then the highest classification in the state of Alabama.

Thompson has been on a torrid form since beginning Class 7A, Area 5 play. The Warriors moved to 5-0 with the victory and have outscored area opponents Prattville, Tuscaloosa County and Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa by a total of 44-0.

Thompson’s defense continued to dominate against the Lions after the Warriors secured a dominant 8-0 win in their previous meeting at Prattville High School on Friday, March 14. Just a little under a month later, coach Dan DeMasters’ side repeated his success against 1-11 Prattville.

Just like in their first meeting, the Warriors shut down the Lions offense and secured a clean sheet. While they were unable to reach the same offensive heights, Thompson still put together a dominant performance to secure victory.

Dia Montiel-Duenas led the Warriors attack on the night with two goals to secure a brace. She also assisted on the other two goals to earn four goal contributions in the 4-0 victory.

Her sister Luna Montiel-Duenas also found the back of the net as she finished the match with a goal that Dia assisted on. Charli Gantt secured the other goal to help Thompson put four goals on the scoreboard.

In addition to Dia Montiel-Duenas’ two assists, Holland Button and Nathalie Gonzalez assisted on her two goals to finish with an assist each.

With the win, the Warriors improved to 14-4-1 overall and 5-0 in area play. They will continue their six-match homestand on Thursday, April 10 at 5:30 p.m. against the Class 6A No. 1 and national No. 5 Spain Park Jaguars.
