ALABASTER – The Thompson Warriors continued their strong run of form as the varsity boys and girls soccer teams defeated a county foe in the Spain Park Jaguars.

Thompson’s girls secured a 2-1 win over Spain Park, the No. 1 team in Class 6A, before the boys rallied from conceding the opening goal to win 4-1 on Thursday, April 10 at Warrior Stadium.

In the girls game, the Warriors got the upper hand in a clash of two of the top teams in the state of Alabama. Jayna Chakua picked out Luna Montiel-Duenas on the pass, and she converted the goal to put Thompson up 1-0.

That one-goal lead held through the halftime break as the Warriors went into the huddle on top.

From there, Thompson doubled up its lead early in the second half thanks to a connection from the Montiel-Duenas sisters. Luna sent a ball over to Dia Montiel-Duenas, which led to the second goal of the night for the Warriors and a 2-0 advantage.

However, Spain Park wouldn’t go down without a fight.

In the 68th minute, Reese Oldfield continued her goalscoring tear to cut the deficit to one for the Jags and put the visitors right back in the ball game.

Thompson responded well to the challenge, dispatching Spain Park’s chances with its defense to see out the 2-1 victory.

As for the boys, the Jags struck first to take a 1-0 lead and leave the Warriors needing to respond.

Thompson wasted little time getting back on level terms as Brayden Herrera snatched the ball from Spain Park’s center back and sent a through ball to Dylan Huerta. Huerta made a one-tap pass across the box to Aram Arreola, who came in along the back side to fire a shot and tie the game at 1-1.

Arreola also played a key part in the second goal as he played a ball to Huerta, who finished off the goal and gave the Warriors a 2-1 lead.

Thompson later got a big chance to extend its lead off a free kick. Huerta settled the initial cross with his chest and gave the ball to Arreola, who finished off their latest connection with a goal to increase the lead to 3-1.

Arreola finished off his hat trick with the Warriors’ final goal of the night as he took a Christian McLaughlin assist on the run to finish off the 4-1 win.

Thompson’s boys improved to 13-5-1 on the year while the girls are now 15-4-1 overall. Both are ranked No. 6 in their individual coaches polls.

The boys will hit the road to face the Calera Eagles on Tuesday, April 15 at 5:30 p.m. at the Eagle Sports Complex while the girls will host the rival Hoover Buccaneers for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Warrior Stadium.
