MONTEVALLO – The Montevallo Bulldogs are officially in the Class 5A soccer playoffs in their first season in the classification as they swept the season series with the Sipsey Valley Bears.
Montevallo’s boys soccer team defeated Sipsey Valley 15-0 on Monday, April 14 at Theron Fisher Stadium after the girls won 10-0.
The victories secured one of the top two spots in Class 5A, Area 8 for both the boys and girls. Both teams still have a slim chance of clinching the area title, but they will need to defeat Indian Springs by four goals on Friday, April 18 on the road at Indian Springs School.
Should the Bulldogs secure second place, they will be on the road at the Sylacauga Aggies for the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.
The boys saw 14 different goalscorers in the commanding victory over Sipsey Valley, which ended at halftime as Montevallo overmatched and overpowered the Bears.
Aaron Gallegos was the lone Bulldog with a brace as he had two goals. Alexis Lopez, Irving Choto, Junior Alvarenga, Ricky Chavez, Ulises Sanchez and Antonio Zavala each secured goals in 12-the victory.
In addition, Adrian Bautista, Pablo Olivo, Gregory Castillo, Tynan Ngalu, Jesus Munoz, Daniel Pineda and Christian Diaz all found the back of the net to get the lead up to 15-0.
Those goals came even as Montevallo was forced down to nine men for the final 15 minutes of the half. Despite that, the Bulldogs still secured the clean sheet on defense to walk away with the win.
The girls also had a big victory on their hands as they hit the double-digit mark to secure the mercy-rule victory.
Three different players had multiple goals in the victory, including Mallory Diaz, Nicole Amora Sosa and Alondra Torres, who each scored twice against Sipsey Valley.
Yazmin Chavez, Bella Waddell and Gloribel Sanchez finished the game with a goal apiece. Zabdy Perez also found the scoresheet with a goal, and she was also active in the buildup as she finished with five assists on the evening.
Fatima Martinez also had multiple assists in the game as she secured two assists against the Bears.
Montevallo’s boys are now 13-3-2 and 6-1 in area play while the girls are 12-4-1 and also 6-1 in the area. Before the area finale against Indian Springs, the Bulldogs will host the Class 6A Shades Valley Mounties on Thursday, April 17 at Theron Fisher Stadium. The girls will play at 5:30 p.m. before the boys game at 7 p.m.
