HOOVER – The Spain Park Jaguars needed just 10 seconds to take the lead over the McAdory Yellow Jackets, and 10 proved to be the magic number in the end as the Jags put that many goals in the back of the net to survive and advance.

Spain Park defeated McAdory 10-0 on Thursday, April 24 at Spain Park High School, putting last year’s first-round heartbreak in the rearview mirror to move on to the Class 6A second round.

That 10-second goal came from Reese Oldfield, who started her night with a score shortly after kickoff thanks to an assist from Addy Soehn to take a 1-0 lead. She would go on to finish with five goals and an assist.

Oldfield continued to roll in the first half and ended up with a natural hat trick, scoring the next two goals to take her tally to three goals and the Jags’ lead to 3-0.

Gianna Thornton then joined the scoring party with the next goal to put Spain Park in front 4-0. She ended the evening with a goal alongside three assists.

The Jags weren’t content to go into the break with just that lead as Hannah Dooley put one past the McAdory keeper to increase the lead to 5-0 ahead of the halftime huddle.

Oldfield resumed her scoring ways to start out the second half, scoring just after the break to take the lead to 6-0. From there, Oldfield finished off her scoring haul with her fifth goal of the night, which was Spain Park’s seventh.

While Soehn finished the game with five assists on the Jags’ 10 goals, she also ended up with a goal of her own. She made the lead 8-0 to keep the offensive momentum rolling for the hosts.

After that, Cadence Leemon found the back of the net for the first time on the night with her team’s ninth goal. Spain Park needed just one more goal from there to finish off the mercy-rule win, and Leemon was happy to give her team that, securing her brace and the 10-0 win.

With the win, the Jags advanced to the second round of the playoffs to face the winner of Friday, April 25’s matchup between the Helena Huskies and Briarwood Christian Lions.

That game will take place either Monday, April 28 or Tuesday, April 29 with a time and site to be announced after the conclusion of the first round.
