Local athletes win outdoor sectional titles, advance to state

It was a big weekend for local track and field athletes as they punched their tickets to state at the AHSAA’s sectional championships on April 25 and 26.

Shelby County schools were spread throughout multiple locations. The Chelsea Hornets, Spain Park Jaguars, Thompson Warriors, Oak Mountain Eagles, Briarwood Christian Lions and Westminster School at Oak Mountain Knights were at the Hewitt-Trussville Sectional.

In addition, the Pelham Panthers, Helena Huskies, Calera Eagles and Indian Springs School competed in the Northridge Sectional, the Montevallo Bulldogs and Shelby County Wildcats were at the Smiths Station Sectional and the Vincent Yellow Jackets went down to Lochapoka.

For individual events, the top five competitors who met state qualifying standards made it to state plus four wild cards from the four best athletes across all sections who did not automatically qualify. The top three relay teams plus four wild cards advanced to state.

Here are the county athletes who finished in the top three of their respective events.

 

Hewitt-Trussville

Chelsea’s boys won the Class 6A sectional team title with 94 points and the girls came in second with 152 points.

Westminster OM’s girls won the Class 3A sectional team title with 150 points, beating out Lee-Scott’s total of 148.5, while the boys finished in second in the team standings with 94 points.

Spain Park’s Laila Sibley won the Class 6A girls discus sectional title with a mark of 106-02.

Briarwood’s Emma Kerley came in second place in the Class 6A girls triple jump with a mark of 37-02.00 while Chelsea’s Tamarah Rice came in third with a mark of 37-01.00. Kerley also secured third in the Class 6A girls high jump with a mark of 5-00.00.

Westminster’s Olivia Montgomery came in second in the Class 3A girls javelin with a mark of 99-00. She also took second place in the Class 3A girls discus with a mark of 80-05.

Thompson got the top two spots in the Class 7A girls shot put with Akasha Dudley winning the sectional title with a mark of 42-00.50 and Alaura Myers earned second with a mark of 37-11.00.

Dudley also took the Class 7A girls discus championship on Saturday with a mark of 128-07.

Chelsea’s Tamarah Rice won the Class 6A girls long jump sectional title with a mark of 17-10.00 while Kerley took third with a mark of 17-02.25.

Spain Park’s Jonathan Fonbah won the Class 6A boys high jump with a mark of 6-04.00, which was tied with Benjamin Russell’s Cedarian Morgan. Chelsea’s Jacob Adeema tapped out one height below them at 6-02.00, good enough for third place.

Spain Park’s Zachary Erickson won the Class 6A boys discus throw with a mark of 159-07. He also finished third in the Class 6A boys shot put with a mark of 45-01.50.

Chelsea’s Nile Cummings won the Class 6A boys triple jump with a mark of 45-05.00. He also earned third place in the Class 6A boys long jump with a mark of 21-09.00.

Oak Mountain’s Samiah Jones finished in third in the Class 7A girls triple jump with her mark of 35-02.50.

Oak Mountain’s Chase Lovell threw for a mark of 23-01 in the Class 7A boys ambulatory javelin throw, recorded a 400-meter run time of 1:33.94 and ran a 19.02 in the 100-meter dash and 39.81 in the 200-meter days to make the state championship.

Chelsea’s Gabe Pendley won the Class 6A boys javelin with a mark of 172-11.

Oak Mountain’s Blake Harry secured the win in the Class 7A boys high jump by clearing a mark of 6-04.00.

Briarwood’s Blakeley Margene came in third place in the Class 6A girls pole vault with a mark of 8-06.00.

Chelsea’s Wyatt Irvin won the Class 6A boys pole vault with a mark of 13-00.00 while his teammate Jonathan Ludwig was the other player to record a height with his mark of 12-00.00.

Chelsea’s Sydney Carroll earned third place in the Class 6A girls javelin throw with a mark of 120-00.

Thompson’s Arianna Hall won the Class 7A girls high jump with a mark of 5-02.00.

Weaver Caldwell of Westminster OM won the Class 3A boys 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:43.45 with his teammate Quinn McCurry earning second place with a time of 4:44.65.

Caldwell also won the Class 3A boys 3,200-meter run with a time of 9:58.68, just beating out McCurry’s time of 9:58.98.

Westminster OM’s Maris Sellers came in third in the Class 3A girls 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:47.40.

Chelsea’s Ty Cason won the Class 6A girls 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:08.97 while her teammate Conner Campbell won the boys race with a time of 4:22.84.

Campbell took first in the Class 6A boys 3,200-meter run with a time of 9:33.48.

Cason and Mia Dunavant went one-two in the Class 6A girls 400-meter run with Cason’s time of 56.21 seconds and Dunavant’s time of 57.51 seconds.

Oak Mountain’s Ava Fields won the Class 7A girls 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:59.57.

Oak Mountain’s John Shoemaker took the top spot in the Class 7A boys 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:20.83 while Cooper Jeffcoat came in second for the Eagles with a time of 4:21.22.

Westminster’s Reese Robbins won the Class 3A girls 400-meter run with a time of 1:02.06 while her teammate Helen Harbert took third place with a time of 1:04.20, beating out her other teammate Emily Mungai at the line.

Robbins also won the Class 3A 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.12 seconds.

Spain Park’s Isaac Battles secured second place in the Class 6A boys 400-meter run with a time of 48.57 seconds.

Thompson’s Loan Boackle came in second place in the Class 7A girls 400-meter run with her time of 58.05 seconds.

Jeffcoat won the Class 7A boys 400-meter run sectional title with a time of 47.87 seconds.

Westminster OM won the Class 3A girls 4×800-meter relay with a time of 10:58.00 and won the Class 3A boys 4×800-meter relay with a time of 9:22.29.

Chelsea came in second in the Class 6A girls 4×800-meter relay with a time of 9:53.33 while Briarwood earned third with a time of 10:01.00.

Oak Mountain earned first place in the Class 7A girls 4×800-meter relay with a time of 9:37.41.

Westminster OM’s Maris Sellers came in second place in the Class 3A 3,200-meter run with a time of 12:40.81, and her teammate Sarah Adams finished third with a time of 12:41.99.

Briarwood’s Mary Grace Parker won the girls 3,200-meter run for Class 6A with a time of 11:18.40.

Shoemaker secured first place for Oak Mountain in the Class 7A boys 3,200-meter run with a time of 9:24.11.

Chelsea won the Class 6A girls 4×100-meter relay with a time of 48.23 seconds.

Thompson won the Class 7A girls 4×100-meter relay with a time of 47.28 seconds, and the Warriors finished third in the boys version of the race with a time of 42.74 seconds.

Chelsea’s Addison Foster earned first in the Class 6A girls 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.48 seconds. Briarwood’s Livi Reebals was right behind her in second place with a time of 16.11 seconds.

Foster also beat out Reebals for the 300-meter hurdles as Foster finished in 45.72 seconds while Reebals earned a time of 47.52 seconds.

 

Thompson’s Trinity Williams secured second in the girls 100-meter hurdles for Class 7A with a time of 15.76 seconds.

Chelsea’s Kamryn Hudson earned second in the Class 6A girls 100-meter dash with a time of 12.60 seconds.

Thompson’s Cherish Brewer took first place in the Class 7A 100-meter dash with a time of 12.20 seconds while her teammate Jhaidyn Suggs earned third with a time of 12.57 seconds. Brewer also earned second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.22 seconds.

Westminster OM’s Pippa Hussar won the Class 3A girls 800-meter run with a time of 2:26.08, just beating her teammate Mungai’s second-place time of 2:26.65.

Westminster went one-two-three in the Class 3A boys 800-meter run. McCurry took first with a time of 2:06.06, Caleb Pettagrue earned second with a time of 2:06.39 and Weaver Caldwell secured third with a time of 2:07.01.

Cason and Dunavant gave Chelsea the top two spots in the Class 6A girls 800-meter run with Cason’s time of 2:12.79 and Dunavant’s time of 2:14.78.

Campbell secured third place in the Class 6A boys 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.98.

Oak Mountain’s Catarina Williams came in second in the Class 7A girls 800-meter run with a time of 2:13.68.

Jeffcoat won the Class 7A boys 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.03, and his Oak Mountain teammate Shoemaker earned third place with a time of 1:55.62.

Westminster OM won the Class 3A girls 4×400-meter relay with a time of 4:26.08. Chelsea won the 6A version of the event with a time of 3:57.23, and Oak Mountain earned second in the 7A girls relay with a time of 3:59.20.

The Eagles took third in the Class 7A boys 4×400-meter relay with a time of 3:22.20.

 

Northridge

Pelham’s Emily Wester won the Class 6A girls 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:20.69 while Janelle Ramos earned third with a time of 5:21.99.

Wester came in second in the Class 6A girls 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.53 and Ramos earned third with a time of 2:22.26.

Pelham’s Emma Grace Howard took second in the Class 6A girls high jump with a mark of 5-02.00 and tied with three other athletes.

Indian Springs’ Cara Huff won the Class 4A girls discus title with a mark of 135-05 as well as the shot put with a mark of 40-10.50.

Indian Springs’ Quinn Conroy took first in the Class 4A boys 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:40.03 and won the boys 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:03.07.

Calera’s Reignan Evans won the Class 6A girls discus with a mark of 110-08.

Pelham won the Class 6A girls 4×400-meter relay with a time of 4:02.95.

Pelham was third in the Class 6A girls 4×800-meter relay with a time of 10:16.69 and also in the boys race with a time of 8:36.49.

Pelham’s Tyler Tucker took third in the Class 6A boys javelin throw with a mark of 149-03.

Helena’s Michael Sesteli secured second in the Class 6A boys pole vault after clearing a height of 13-00.00.

Pelham’s Maria McGough earned third place in the Class 6A girls 200-meter dash with a time of 25.72 seconds.

 

Smiths Station

Shelby County’s Carter Wood won the Class 5A boys 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:38.05 and took second in the Class 5A boys 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:42.35.

Lorelei Hallmark of Shelby County earned first in the Class 5A girls 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:49.60.

Shelby County’s girls 4×800-meter relay team won the Class 5A race with a time of 11:04.13.

Montevallo’s Kyler Mitchell finished second in the Class 5A boys shot put with a mark of 46-8.

The Wildcats finished second in the Class 5A boys 4×800-meter run with a time of 8:56.85.

Shelby County’s Jane Matthew Reed came in third in the Class 5A girls 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.53.

Josie Payne of Shelby County secured third in the Class 5A girls 3,200-meter run with a time of 14:02.87.

Shelby County’s Elsa Harper took third in the Class 5A girls high jump with a mark of 4-08.00.

 

Loachapoka

Vincent’s T.K. Smoot won the Class 2A girls triple jump with a mark of 33-04.75.

Vincent’s Calvin Johnson came in second in the Class 2A boys javelin throw with a mark of 147-01.

Kendarius Chapman of Vincent earned third in the Class 2A boys shot put with a mark of 44-00.50.

Vincent took third in the Class 2A girls 4×100-meter relay with a time of 53.50 seconds.

Vincent’s Jayden Roberts earned second in the Class 2A boys 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.06 seconds and third in the Class 2A boys 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.07 seconds.

Vincent’s Kinsley Perkins won the Class 2A girls shot put with a mark of 37-05.00.
