Jenny Wood discusses her passion for education as a teacher at Helena Intermediate School.
First, tell me more about yourself.
I’m someone who has always loved working with children. From a young age, I knew I wanted to be in a role where I could make a difference in the lives of others, and teaching gave me that opportunity. I’ve spent 13 years in elementary education, and it has brought so much joy and purpose into my life. Outside of school, I love spending time with my family, reading and doing anything outdoors that helps me recharge.
Can you tell me about your career in education?
I began teaching right after college and have been in the classroom ever since. Over the years, I’ve had the honor of teaching so many wonderful children, each with their own unique personality, strengths and stories. I’ve taught mostly upper grades, but most of my experience is with fifth grade. I’m passionate about helping young learners build strong foundations—not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well. I’ve also been involved in curriculum planning and mentoring new teachers, which has been incredibly rewarding.
What kind of impact do the students you teach have on your life as a teacher?
My students are the heart of everything I do. They inspire me with their courage, their kindness and their curiosity. Even on the hardest days, they remind me why this work matters. Their creativity and resilience constantly remind me why I chose this profession. Watching them grow, seeing that moment when a concept finally clicks or hearing their stories and laughter—it’s those moments that stay with me. They teach me just as much as I teach them—about patience, kindness and the joy of learning.
What has been your favorite thing about working at HIS over the course of your time?
HIS is a place filled with love and support. The people here—our students, families, teachers and staff—truly care about one another. My favorite thing about working at HIS has been the sense of community. The staff, students and families all come together to support one another, and that creates such a warm and welcoming environment. I’ve built lifelong friendships here and feel so proud to be part of a school that puts students first.
Do you have a message you would like to say to the Helena community?
To the Helena community—thank you for being our partners in this journey. Your support, encouragement and trust mean the world to us. Our students feel the love you pour into them, and we feel it too. It truly takes a village, and I am so grateful to be part of this one. Together, we are shaping not just learners—we’re empowering future leaders, thinkers and citizens.
