May is a powerful month of transition—a time of closing out chapters and preparing to write new ones. As the school year winds down and the promise of summer stretches ahead, we pause to reflect on what has been accomplished and all that lies on the horizon.

First and foremost, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the upcoming graduates of Helena High School. You’ve navigated a journey full of challenges and triumphs, and your dedication has led you to this exciting milestone. Whether your next steps take you into the workforce, college, the military, or a gap year of exploration, know that your city is proud of you. You carry with you the values of Helena—resilience, integrity, and community. We look forward to seeing how each of you will continue to make your mark in the world.

April was a month of fun, connection, and celebration here in Helena. The kickoff to the Old Town Live presented by Central State Bank concert series was a huge success. JJ Grey and Mofro delivered an unforgettable performance, and the turnout was absolutely phenomenal. I want to give a huge shoutout to the HOTBoard volunteers and our generous sponsors for making this event possible. The time, effort, and passion that go into organizing Old Town Live cannot be overstated, and Helena continues to benefit from your hard work.

What makes this series even more special is the reach it has beyond our city limits. At the April concert, I met guests from Gulf Shores to Huntsville, and even visitors from North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Missouri. These concerts are becoming a regional destination event, and I’d love to hear from more out-of-state guests who’ve experienced the magic of Old Town Live. It’s a testament to the atmosphere we’ve built together—welcoming, vibrant, and unforgettable.

Be sure to mark your calendars for May 17th as we continue the series with another incredible lineup. Reg from Birmingham Mountain Radio will emcee the night, introducing LaAlan Carter Band, John R. Miller, and Drayton Farley to the stage. It’s going to be another spectacular evening under the stars at Amphitheater Park—don’t miss it!

April also brought a significant leadership transition within our Helena Police Department. We were honored to officially welcome Chief Mike Wood, who was sworn in last month. Chief Wood brings with him more than three decades of law enforcement experience, most recently serving as Chief of Police in Bessemer. But beyond his impressive résumé, what makes his appointment so meaningful is that Helena is home for him and his family. With his leadership, I’m confident that our community is in good hands for years to come.

I also want to extend sincere thanks to Sergeant O’Farril and Lieutenant Hudson, who provided steady, dedicated leadership during the interim period. Their professionalism ensured the continued strength of the department and safety of our city through a time of transition.

As we move through May, many of us feel the momentum of wrapping up the “rat race” of the school year and anticipating the slower, more relaxed rhythm of summer. Let’s finish strong—students, teachers, and parents alike. You’ve earned it.

And while we embrace all that summer will bring—from vacations and backyard cookouts to lazy days at Joe Tucker Park or along Buck Creek—I want to remind everyone of one important way we can support our city year-round: shop local. Helena’s businesses are the heart of our community. Whether it’s grabbing a meal, finding a unique gift, or hiring a local service, every dollar spent locally is an investment back into Helena.

We are blessed to call this incredible city our home. Let’s continue to show up for each other, cheer each other on, and keep Helena moving forward together.

Wishing you a wonderful month ahead.

Together As One,

Brian
