MONTEVALLO – The Montevallo City Council issued a proclamation honoring Teresa Burden, a longtime local educator, during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, May 12.

Burden, who has served Montevallo since 1994, recently retired. Montevallo Mayor Rusty Nix detailed her career during the proclamation.

“Teresa Burden (has) served the Montevallo, Alabama community since August 1994 as a school teacher for Shelby County Board of Education at both Montevallo Middle and Elementary schools,” Nix said. “Teresa was selected as Teacher of the Year for the 2023-2024 school year at Montevallo Elementary School.”

During her tenure, Burden served in numerous roles whilst being committed to helping students reach their academic and personal potentials. Following 31 years of service, Burden will now retire from her work with Montevallo students.

Councilperson Sonya Swords was emotional when recognizing Burden and her impact on Montevallo as a whole.

“My child was one of the many lucky ones to have you (as a teacher),” Swords said. “You leave some big shoes to fill at that school. My child was really blessed to be in your room. Thank you for all of the students that you’ve touched over the years.”

Along with recognizing Burden, the council held a public hearing regarding a request by Stanley McClellan, a local property owner, to construct a 900-square-foot building for the storage of classic cars at 113 Montevallo Commons Parkway. The property is zoned B-2 General Business District. Following the hearing, the council approved a resolution for the project to move forward with the recommendation from the Planning and Zoning Commission.

The council also approved an annual contract with H&L Outdoors for maintenance of the Montevallo Cemetery. The services include mowing, edging, weed-eating, blowing debris, picking up trash and trimming shrubbery. The monthly cost for these services will be $5,866.66.

An ordinance that sets the qualification fee at $50 for candidates seeking the offices of mayor or City Council in the upcoming Tuesday, Aug. 26 municipal election was then formally introduced in a first reading. A runoff, if needed, is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 23.

Another first-reading ordinance proposed the transfer of municipal property no longer needed for city use to the Montevallo Water and Sewer Board. Further details and final consideration will occur at a future meeting.
