BIRMINGHAM – Municipal Attorney and former Shelby County Commissioner Jeff Brumlow has been appointed by Shelby County to serve as a director on the new Birmingham water regional board.

Brumlow was appointed by the Shelby County Commission on Monday, May 12 to serve as a director on the regional board with a term to last five years. Shelby County is allowed one appointee on the newly-formed regional board which, in addition to Jefferson and Blount counties, services approximately 14,000 accounts, homes and businesses in Shelby County thanks to the Lake Purdy reservoir.

Brumlow has more than 25 years of legal experience with a focus on local government representation, civil litigation and appellate practice. He previously served as Shelby County commissioner for District 6 from April 2023 to November 2024. He currently works as the city attorney and prosecutor for the city of Alabaster where he has served since 2004. He founded the Brumlow Legal Group firm in Trussville in 2008 which represents cities, housing authorities and public boards through Central Alabama.

Brumlow’s appointment comes after the passage of Senate Bill 330 which transitions sizable municipal water works boards into regional boards. As a result of the bill, which has been signed by Gov. Kay Ivey, the appointment structure for the Birmingham Water Works Board has been changed with the new seven-member board seeing appointments from the governor, lieutenant governor, Shelby County, Blount County, Jefferson County, Birmingham and Birmingham mayor.

The following individuals have been appointed to the regional board:

  • Tommy Hudson – appointed by Gov. Kay Ivey
  • Bill Morris – appointed by Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth
  • Sheila Tyson – appointed by Birmingham City Council
  • Phillip Wiedmeyer – appointed by Jefferson County
  • Jeff Brumlow – appointed by Shelby County
  • David Standridge – appointed by Blount County
  • Jarvis Patton – appointed by Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin

The new Birmingham Water Works Regional Board is expected to hold its first meeting on Wednesday, May 14 at 6:30 p.m.
