ALABASTER – Alabaster Mayor Scott Brakefield recognized nurses and faculty from Baptist Health Shelby Hospital and the 10U girls basketball team for their recent championship win during an Alabaster City Council meeting on Monday, May 12.
During the meeting, Brakefield delivered a proclamation to representatives from Baptist Health Shelby Hospital declaring National Nurses Week and National Hospital Week in the city of Alabaster.
“(Baptist Health Shelby) hospital has been an integral part of our community for a long period of time,” Brakefield said.
National Nurses Week was observed May 6-12 with the theme “The Power of Nurses” and National Hospital Week was May 11-17 with the theme “We Are Healthcare.”
“National Nurses (Week) and National Hospital Week celebrates the healthcare providers who day in and day out support the health of our communities through compassionate care, constant innovation and dedication,” read Brakefield’s proclamation. “The city of Alabaster recognizes the hard working people who make Baptist Health Shelby Hospital deserve universal regard and appreciation for keeping our community healthy.”
Brakefield presented the proclamation to a group of nurses from Baptist Health Shelby Hospital in addition to the healthcare facility’s president, Holly Dean, who was present at the meeting.
“I just want to say, ‘Thank you,’” Dean said to those in attendance. “Thank you for the trust that you have in the care that we deliver to support the community here and also the surrounding community. We are thrilled to be your healthcare provider and honestly it is a privilege to do what we do each and every day.”
Dean also expressed her gratitude for the nurses who attended the meeting and represent the many staff members that make Baptist Health Shelby Hospital operational.
“I’m here with a wonderful group of nurses, and we could not do it without them,” Dean said.
Brakefield also recognized the Alabaster Parks and Recreation 10U girls basketball team for recently securing a state championship by presenting them with pins and a proclamation honoring the achievement.
The team went 17-0 on its path to the state title—marking the 10U girls basketball team as the very first 10U state champion in the history of the city of Alabaster.
“This remarkable accomplishment demonstrates the dedication, hard work and exceptional athletic ability of players, coaches and support staff,” read Brakefield’s proclamation.
The 10U girls basketball team is led by head coach Peter Bevel, assistant coach Kamissah Shaw and assistant coach Mario Sturdivant.
The basketball team consists of the following players:
