CALERA – Teams teed off at the Leadership Shelby County golf tournament on Monday, April 21, kicking off a day of fun on the green while benefitting students in Shelby County.

The annual Leadership Shelby County golf tournament and silent auction took place at Timberline Golf Club in Calera on April 21—raising funds for scholarships for graduates of the Youth Leadership Shelby County program.

“This year’s golf tournament was a huge success,” said Kendall Williams, director of Leadership Shelby County. “First of all, the weather held out which always makes for a great day for everybody. We had an increase in sponsorships of teams and just everyone had a really great time.”

Attendees enjoyed boxed lunches from Full Moon BBQ before the tournament kicked off at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start. The LSC golf tournament featured a scramble format with teams of four taking alternating shots from the best ball hoping to combine for the best aggregate score at the end of the tournament. This year’s event saw 24 teams compete.

“There were a lot of teams that didn’t fill up with just their own people and so having that camaraderie of a mix of business and public figures and a different mix-up of teams was good to hear as well,” Williams said.

While no one scored a hole-in-one at the tournament, Williams said that several came close which added to the excitement of the day.

Alongside the golf tournament, a silent auction took place which raised approximately $5,000 with the entire day of festivities contributing $24,900 toward scholarships for students across Shelby County who have graduated from the Youth Leadership Shelby County program.

“I think the message that it actually supports the youth program and scholarships is growing and people are just actively more giving and more willing to participate,” Williams said.

Williams said a sizable portion of the funds raised for students was made possible thanks to the event’s title sponsor 58 INC—Shelby County’s economic development corporation.

Youth Leadership Shelby County is a six-month program designed for students entering the 11th grade that seeks to encourage young future leaders by providing them a guiding hand. The program features a variety of days themed around a specific aspect of the county that the students learn about. Students who graduate from the program are eligible for a scholarship that the organization distributes each year thanks to generosity of participants of the LSC golf tournament and silent auction.

“It’s always impressive to see, not just the leadership alumni, but the community at large, become engaged,” Williams said. “The youth program itself has grown in popularity… I think they’ve seen the benefit of what these students get out of it.”
