HARPERSVILLE – Graduates turned the tassels on their caps—signifying a transition to the next stage in their life as they said goodbye to Coosa Valley Academy during a graduation ceremony on Thursday, May 15.
Coosa Valley Academy said goodbye to 12 seniors in the 53rd graduating class during a commencement ceremony at The Church at Chelsea Westover.
“What a wonderful night this is going to be,” CVA Administrator Pam Lovelady said. “I am very fortunate to have the joy of being with my children every day… I can write a book about each one of them.”
During commencement, Lovelady took the time to personally recognize each of the 12 graduating seniors and their family members by describing each senior’s personality and explaining how much her students mean to her.
“You are the class of endless possibilities,” Lovelady said. “Within this class holds a variety of amazing strengths in academics, business minds, great work ethics with commons sense and a determination to never give up on your dreams.”
Senior Michelle Alverson was named as the salutatorian for the 53rd graduating class of Coosa Valley Academy and gave a salutatory address.
“This place has shaped us into the people we are today,” Alverson said. “Through every challenge, we’ve become more than classmates, we’ve become family—one that I’ll miss very much. And I pray that each one of you continues on the path that Coosa Valley has helped us begin.”
Senior Draven Culver was named as the valedictorian for the 53rd graduating class of Coosa Valley Academy and provided the valedictory address.
During his speech, Culver focused on a topic that touched him deeply and asked the audience if they have ever felt insignificant.
“That’s something that’s always on my mind,” he said. “It’s never in the back or in the side, it’s always the front.”
Culver said he wrote a traditional speech but decided that this topic was one that had more meaning and successfully represented who he was. He said that he finally found the answer to his personal struggle with feeling insignificant.
“I’ve always had this fear of being insignificant but what matters is much smaller and yet far greater,” Culver said. “What matters are the people closest to you, your friends, family, classmates—those relationships, those bonds are far greater than anything. That’s where I finally realized my success is being there with someone else—that’s where I’m enough. That’s where we’re all enough.”
After both the valedictorian and salutatorian address and the bestowing of awards, it was time for the traditional conferring of the diplomas by the staff at Coosa Valley Academy.
Each student was called forward and conferred their diploma by Bill Goodwyn alongside Lovelady who presented the senior flower and gave each of her students a farewell hug. As they reached the end of the stage, each student turned over the tassel—solidifying their status as a graduate.
The ceremony closed with a singing of the alma mater led by Culver and Kadence Fields before the class of 2025 traveled to the back of the building and joined one another in throwing their caps.
