Do you remember the last time you were extremely sick? Do you recall waking up and no longer being able to breathe through your nose? Have you had a splitting headache so bad that you couldn’t do anything other than lay there? Or perhaps you were so nauseous that you just had to sit down on the bathroom floor and wait it out?

In these moments, we realize just how much we take our health for granted and when we’re at our most vulnerable, we need expedient and efficient medical help to get us back to normal.

The country recently celebrated National Hospitals Week and National Nurses Week—a time dedicated to reminding us of the vital role that healthcare workers play. From the nurses gathering your vitals and taking your blood, to doctors who guide intensive surgeries, healthcare workers are an indispensable part of society.

When you’re perfectly healthy, it’s easy to forget how much we need them but once you get sick, then you immediately remember. You need the nurse to answer the call and write down your appointment and the doctor or nurse practitioner to inspect the issue. You’ve also got the staff that help keep the medical facilities clean and the pharmacists who work to ensure you receive the proper medicine you need to get back on your feet.

Although it has been five years, we can still vividly remember how essential our healthcare workers were during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic when everything was so unclear.

While you personally may not need them every day, healthcare workers are always standing on the sideline, working long hours to make sure society is able to keep running because it would fall apart without their help and dedication.
