Mt. Laurel Elementary SRO struck by car

SHOAL CREEK – A Shelby County Schools School Resource Officer was recently struck in the car rider line of Mt. Laurel Elementary School and taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
On Thursday, May 22 at 1:35 p.m., the Shelby 911 Dispatch was notified of a pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle in the car rider line at Mt. Laurel Elementary School, which was later confirmed to be the on-duty School Resource Officer. The SRO was assisting with the car rider line at the time of the incident.
Following the report, medics were dispatched from Cahaba Valley Fire and transported the deputy to a local hospital for evaluation, who has since been released.
Sheriff John Samaniego requested that the Hoover Police Department conduct an investigation of the accident. The HPD reported that the driver of the vehicle was Douglas Frederick Sweet II, age 43 of Birmingham. Sweet was arrested for driving under the influence and taken to the Shelby County Jail, and since that time, has posted a $1,000 bond.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office thanked those involved for their urgency and concern for the health of the injured deputy.
“We want to thank the Shelby County Board of Education, and particularly the staff of Mt. Laurel Elementary, for their outpouring of concern for the deputy,” read an official release by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
